Graphics - file formats

We're a new dev team creating our first adventure game. We would really appreciate some guidelines regarding the various graphics formats, supported by WME - pros, cons etc.
- What should we choose for backgrounds and objects?
- We haven't made the final decision about the characters/animation yet, but a couple of pointers would be nice.
The graphics in our game are hand drawn/2D.

For graphic files with no transparency jpg should be fine. For anything with transparency png+alpha channel.
