Fiona's fairy tale - dev thread
« on: September 18, 2009, 03:58:15 AM »

18-Sep-09

In this thread i want to report a little bit about the development of the p&c-adventure "Fiona's fairy tale" (working title).
Well ... to be true at the moment there is not much more than a vague prospect about the feeling of the game (charming, enchanting, lovely, warm, breathtaking, lively, inwardly, melancholic) and some very raw ideas of one or two scenes. The game will be fully handpainted, of course in 2D.

I will be happy about evere critique and every comment and if you have questiones, feel free to ask.

Here is the very first rough sketch of Fiona's head with some intermediate steps (maybe someone finds them usefull).

Oh, i am sorry, the "blog" was capable of being misunderstood. O meant to report here in this thread from time to time (so i changed the topic to "dev thread").

Tank you Finn, your wish is my command.

Here a few steps of Fiona's body:

And here is the very first concept art for Fiona

To me she is not cute enough at the moment so i have to invest some more work until a final version will be finished.

Edit: Did some small adjustments ... left is the old, right the new pic. Head is smaller, lips less red and more smiling, cheeks are  little bit fuller etc. not much all at all but now it is more pleasant imho.

Edit: I like the big nose but most people do not .. so i changed it. Furthermore I added some shadows and scaled down the head a little bit more.

C&C are very welcome.

Thank you all  :)
The eyes are really low and ca. one half of the people would like them higher ... the other half likes them as they are (and because i belong to the half that likes it as it is ... it will stay this way  ;) . To me this gives Fiona a little bit more charisma). But the right eye / left eye from viewer (thx to darky who brought that to my mind) was incorrect. I corrected it and now i draw the different views of the head (front view, side view etc. ... that is more tricky than i thought it would be). Also i make first preparations for the animation process (Before i can start that i have to redesign the teddy ... it is supposed to be a mix between shoulder bag (inventory) and plush bunny.

So, here is the first preview of the first rough animation of a walking cycle (facing southwest). The movement of the arms will change later because with the left arm fiona will hold her plush-bunny-bag (which is hard to design *sigh*) + the shoulders are too wide.  .

This Version is (nearly)12 fps

and this one 16 fps

I am not sure which one i should choose. 16 Looks a little bit smoother but it is much more work and will need more calculating capacity (or not?). So.. i am not sure :(

My advice is go with the 16 fps one... it'll look better. A well animated game is always a plus
