General Discussion / Steve Ince Interview Using Wintermute Engine
« on: November 11, 2005, 11:23:35 PM »
Interesting interview with Steve Ince on the Adventure Developer site.  He is using Wintermute Engine exclusively for his new gaming ventures.  You can read the interview here: http://www.adventuredevelopers.com/featuredetail.php?action=view&featureid=36&showpage=1 . I am not sure how long the interview has been there and astute as the members are on this forum you may already be aware of it.

Enjoy,
Preston

Very cool and interesting concept of game scenario, I will play it when you are finished.  Seems like for a young man in his teens you are already learning tools of the trade to eventually become employed by a game development company (or roll your own like Johnathon Boakes).  If you can knock out 2 scenes a day on a weekend you are doing pretty darn good.

How are you doing your character art generation?

Also can I make a suggestion?... on the title screenshot the artwork is beautiful, but to be able to get past censors and software game ratings you might want to be careful on the nudity as some community standards may not accept that...its fine with me and as I said its beautiful work, but if you want to have good volume of sales you may want to be able to market your finished game to a larger audience.

Keep up the good work and I look forward to the finished product!

Hi,

It looks good, I am not a fan of Anime, but your implementation looks great!

Good luck in releasing your game!

Thanks for the update Orange Brat, I appreciate the info.   I didnt mean the release version, but I meant to ask what edition of 3D Gamestudio do you use?  Standard, Pro, Commercial, etc?   Why that particular edition versus another (I am trying a cost versus performance approach here)?

Thanks,
Preston D

Hi Orange Brat,

Nice very active thread on the Gamestudio forum, I went back and reviewed the link further and missed some updates that were referred to.

Kinda off topic, I see that you mentiioned using 3D Gamestudio.  I am thinking about using 3D Gamestudio for scene rendering and have the following questions:

1. What version do you use and what are your personal observations/experience with the tool if I may ask?
2. Apparently there is some sort of character modeling tool in it, have you ever used that? If not, what do you use and prefer?

I think a few others here on the Wintermute forum use Gamestudio as well.

Thanks,
Preston D

General Discussion / Welcome Jonathan Boakes!!!
« on: January 11, 2005, 01:35:50 AM »
Hi All,

To the members of the forum, whether you may realize it or not, one of the premiere Adventure Game creators Jonathan Boakes has just joined the Wintermute Forum.

Welcome to the forum Jonathan, I am a great, great fan of your games!

Jonathan, what you will find on this board in conjunction with the Wintermute Engine itself is a lot of great talent, advice and experience.  What you will find with the Wintermute Engine in itself is quite incredible with a lot of capability.  You might drop using Macromedia Director for your game development!

To the rest of the forum team, if you ever have the chance to play one of Jonathan's games please take the opportunity, you won't be disappointed.

Since most of you are pretty savvy with the adventure games out there already, I have been impressed with the line of adventure games created by Jonathan Boakes who created the Dark Fall series of adventure games.  He is a one man show, doing all the graphics and programming (using Macromedia Director).  His games got picked up by the Adventure Company for publishing but it does show you that on your own you can create and sell and be fairly successful.

On his website he has a lot of information including a tutorial on creating an interactive game, here is the URL:

http://www.xxvproductions.co.uk/darkfall2/creation.html

He has some intriguing puzzles in his games and great graphics and sound effects.  He does use actors for voices and has hired some musicians for minor background music.  Great stereo effects with the headphones on, at one point a dog barked and I thought there was actually a dog outside my door.

When I see his works I get inspired in my own game programming efforts...

Cheers,

Preston

Sorry for the late reply...I was on holiday for a week, thanks so much for answering my question.

I looked at the Daz Studio and it appears that you get the software free, but the content you pay for? Or you can create your own content or download it from a different source than the Daz Studio site?  Seems like it would add up quickly for a full fledged game programmed with all the characters.

How long have you been using this product if I might ask and have you programmed any games or have any screenshots?

Thanks,

Preston D

Game design / Poser Artist versus Poser product...

Has anybody had any experience with Poser Artist versus Poser 5?  I looked at the site and as far as I can tell, Poser Artist appears to be an earlier version of Poser...any experience or advice is appreciated...

Technical forum / How is Molly Made?
« on: December 19, 2004, 03:22:59 AM »
Hi,

Not so much a "How Do I"....but how did Mr.Mnemonic make Molly?  What sort of tool did you use?

This is kinda an extension on the 3D character development software thread earlier....

Thanks!

Hi,

Great thread and replies everyone, I really appreciate your comments and feedback.

I did look into using the Sims characters and the Simposium software and there is enough free meshes and skins out there that you may be able to build enough of a colllection of characters to do a pretty good game with some character depth.

Another option I am actually considering is using live models and rotoscoping the video of their actions to capture all the actor/sprite movements necessary.  Thats another alternative...I know hiring actors is expensive but I think you can shop around and for nominal fees or favors you might be able to find some models willing to do it just for the experience and credits on their dossier.

Thanks for all the replies, this character development is primarily for a game on the Wintermute engine, and I dont think I would be very good at character animation along with many of the other posters as they replied above.   I would essentialy create a 3d character and make screenshots for use as a 2d sprite as an actor/character in Wintermute.  Trouble is you have to create a large variety of characters in various positions (8 for walking, other positions for talking, etc.) and I am not much of an artist, so that is why I am thinking about using the 3d characters, pose them for the needed positions and make the bitmap shots.

I did download a program today for creating Sim characters using their meshes, etc. called Simposeium http://www.simpose.com/ but I have not tried to use it yet and cannot report on its usage and effectiveness.

I am also looking at the Milkshape 3D as was mentioned above.

Again thanks for the replies I will continue to monitor this thread for any more input from anybody else.

Regards,
Preston D
