Extremely slow WME tools
« on: March 19, 2006, 02:46:33 AM »

Hello!

I experience some problems with WME. Suddenly it started to work wery slow. It takes ages to open a project or a scene or a sprite, but two days ago everything was OK. There are no any errors in the log, but something is wrong. I tried to reinstall the program, but it didn't change anything. I thought, that the problem might be with my project only, but when I tried to open the demo project it was again taking about 20-30 seconds to open it.  :'(

It would be great if Mnemonic could help me.
Thanx!

EDITED: Just one more thing. When I try to run the game in project manager it also takes a lot of time to open the initial settings window. When I compiled the game (which was very quick  :o) and tried to run it the same thing - the settings wndow takes very long to appear. I have a previously compiled version of the game, and it starts without any slowness...  :( Something changed in the WME today, but I don't know what it was.  :'( :'( :'(

-did you make any configuration changes (new drivers, DirectX, Windows Update)?
-do you have any anti-virus/anti-spyware software running in the background?
-if you compile the game and run it directly from Windows (NOT from ProjectMan), is it slow too?
-does it make a difference if you enable/disable the "Require 3D acceleration" property in ProjectMan?
-did you try running the project on another computer?
-what WME version, Windows version, video card are you using?
-do other games run ok? did you try running dxdiag to check for any driver/DirectX related problems?

Do you have any other 3d app running in the background? Like a MacOS-like dock panel? From my experience this is causing serious slowness problems to wme.

I'll answer in order you asked:

-yes I had a Windows Update, but I think the problem started before that.  :(
-I have an anti-virus running, but it was always there with no problems before.
-Yes, the compiled game is slow too. It's not the game itself, but the settings window. Once it appears, everything else is OK.
-there's no difference if I enable/disable 3D acceleration.
-No I didn't, I might try.
-WME version - 1.52, Windows version - XP Home edition SP2, video card - ATI MOBILITY RADEON X600 SE
-other games run ok. I'll have a look at dxdiag as well.

To odnorf: No other 3d application running.

My point is, that it worked perfectly, on the same configuration, but the day before yesterday Istarted to have this problem, although I don't remember changing anything in OS nor system.

Thank you, for your reply.  :)

The only thing WME is doing prior to displaying the settings window is querying available hardware, so it appears to be driver/DirectX issue.
The same goes for the tools when opening a new file.

You are right! Just found this line in logs:

"Fatal: error querying available hardware. Exiting."

What is your suggestion on overcoming this problem?

Thanx!

Actually this message is displayed if you cancel the settings window, so don't panic.

12:27: Device selection cancelled by user
12:27: Fatal: error querying available hardware. Exiting.

Anyway, I recommend checking dxdiag, and then reinstalling DirectX and/or video card drivers.

Yet, it's very strange, because the game that I compiled one week ago still starts quickly. I updated DirectX, but it didn't make any difference. I think that WME queryes for some hardware which it didn't ask before...  :( The Project Joe demo also works well. Thus, my system seems to be all right. But the problem still exists.  :-\

Help!  :'(

It's doesn't make much sense. It would be nice if you could confirm the issue can be replicated on another computer and create some minimalistic example I could test myself.

No, it's not a problem, I just need to test if I'm able to replicate the issue. And, yes, please send the example compiled, including the exe.

Mnemonic have already asked before but... do you remember if you have updated any drivers, especially graphics card and/or soundcard? And do you have a software firewall?

I'm asking because I had a similar problem in the past. A newer set of drivers for my graphics card wanted to contact the windows site to check if they were certified and because they were blocked by my firewall, wme had to wait for the connection to time out and thus it was starting very very slow. I hope it makes sense.

No, don't think so.

Yes, I do, but I had it all the time... And WME was working all right. Moreover, what is really strange, that I have this problem only with the newly compiled games, whereas the old ones work OK.  :(

Since you haven't updated any drivers I don't think it's a case like mine.

But if I were you, I'd try disabling the firewall to see if it helps. It could be the old games were allowed to connect, while the new ones still trying to.. Other than that, I can't see why they should act differently.

Thanks all for your suggestions!
However, nothing seem to solve this.  :(

In dxdiag I've got this: The file rdwm1046.sys is not digitally signed, which means that it has not been tested by Microsoft's Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL).  You may be able to get a WHQL logo'd driver from the hardware manufacturer.

That's the only problem in directX, but may it be the reason?

And actually, odnorf, I remember installing Audio Editor Gold. Maybe it brought with it some new drivers.  ???

Not sure what to do...  :'( Any ideas?

I think we can rule out the firewall/drivers problem. But, just in case, can you see any activity in the firewalls' log when you run a compiled game?

Try to disable your firewall. (Like right click on the tray icon -> exit or in any other way your firewall allows you to do so).
And then run wme to see if you still have this problem.

Maybe you should check again for spyware, virii etc. Also look at the task manager if there are no
too hungry processes running. I know I have really similar behavior in my office thanks to ATI card there,
but the computer there is weird anyway.

Or maybe it is time for you to reinstall windows? I do this from six months to one year...

This helps in most cases  ;)

One more thing, could you please post here a piece of wme.log, so that we can see the logged times of the startup steps? There should be obvious which step exactly causes the delay (enumerating DirectDraw devices, Direct3D devices, DirectSound devices etc.).

I think, it might be the problem of the scene editor, since I got wme_crash.txt saying:

No, I don't think it's SceneEdit. SceneEdit wouldn't affect running the game at all. Also, the log shows the game init did everything in one minute, so it doesn't help either.
I'm out of ideas :(

This is only partially true. If I open two scenes (eg. two scene edit instances) the fps of the game drops to half. But it's not of course
the problem vadbag is experiencing.

Re: Extremely slow WME tools

Just one more thing. I turned on Hardware acceleration in ProjetMan and SceneEdit, and now they open quite quickly (3-4 seconds), however, the setting windows still takes about 20-30 seconds to apear, which involves ProjectMan not responding.

And just one more thing I'd like to ask Mnemonik, which is not related to this problem, but still worries me. My actor sometimes walks slower sometimes faster, in other words with variable speed. Is it normal, or it's because my sprites are too big, or something else?

Thanx!

The walking speed changes according to actor's scale. There are no other changes.

Thank you, Mnemonic!
What I mean is when my actor walks (on the same scale) he sometimes walks slower, which looks like the fps getting lower for some time. However, the FPS is stable. This problem is only experienced in accelerated mode. May the both problems be a result of using ATI video card?
Thanx.

Well it's strange. As long as the FPS is stable, there shouldn't be any slowdowns.. I suppose it's completely random? No obvious causes, no disk activity in the background, virus scanners, Google desktop search, something like that?

Quite possible that something works in the backgound, I'll check.

Thanx!
