The problem of 3D characters
« on: June 03, 2005, 02:39:53 PM »

I have a couple of years experience with 3d modeling/texturing, but none with rigging/skinning characters for animation. When you use a game engine like Wintermute or Blitz Backdrop, what 3d program should you use to rig/skin your animation characters?

My problem is, I know how to make my 2d backdrops, but I now need to learn how to rig/skin a animation character for my game. I am trying to decide which 3D program I need to learn. Can I use any 3D software for rigging and skinning, with Wintermute and Blitz Backdrop?

I did play with Animation Master a few months. It is, by far, the easiest program for this sort of work. Most of my 3d background is in Maya. I own both Maya and Lightwave.

So what are my choices, and what do I need to make these 3d characters?

Thanks
Kori

Unless you're using a dedicated modeling package(like Wings), most 3D packages will allow you to skin/rig right there. There are specialized programs, though. There's one called fragMotion which I've whored around the internet for some time. It seems to be building a nice reputation and is something to look into for rigging and animation. As for skinning, look at Ultimate Unwrap.
