Illegal Action when starting a new project.
« on: May 09, 2005, 05:48:45 AM »

I'm not exactly positive if this is the correct forum to post this in, judging by the forum descriptions, it seems like the right place.  But in case it isn't, my apologies in advance.

I'm not exactly sure what I did wrong, so I'll go through this step by step:

1. I downloaded the wme_devkit_132 installation application onto my friend's computer. (I don't have the internet in my apartment).

2. ...and then burnt it to disc so I could take it home and install it on my computer.

3. I installed it onto my computer from the CD it was burnt on.

4. I opened the program, via the icon that was on the desktop.

5.  I started a new project...

...and immediately, I got this:

Projectman
This program has performed an illegal action and will be shut down.

6. I clicked "ok", and it closed Wintermute.

I've no idea what the problem is, so I'm hoping someone here could help me, I'm eager to try Wintermute out.

Thanks,

Hmm... Can I ask a couple of questions?
1) What are your system specs? (Windows/videocard)
2) Does it crash immediately when you click "New..." or after confirming the new project dialog?
3) What if you try opening one of the demo projects instead?

You can try going to Tools->Options and disabling "Use 3D acceleration" to see if it makes any difference.

1. I'm not too sure what kind of video card I have (pretty much everything on my computer is stock with the exception of the CD ROM).  My system is a Windows 98.
2. It crashes after comfirming the new project dialog (entering a name for the project and everything).
3. I also tried opening all 3 of the demo projects.  Same result.

I'll have to do it when I get home, but I will try the 3D acceleration option.

Double check if you have latest DirectX. You can test it for example by issuing dxdiag command from the Start->Run.

This could help.

I tried the 3D acceleration option, and still no result.

But I will check for DirectX when I get home.  I know I have it, but I don't think that it's the newest version.  What do I do if it turns out that it isn't?  Will I need to download it?

Definitely. If you have Windows 98 there is only DirectX 6.0 installed. You need at least DirectX 8.0 to get WME running. There are
two ways how to get it there. Either you download it and burn it the same way as you done that with WME (be sure to grab
redistributable package and not that Microsoft online installer - the installer is only 700kb big so you don't want it) or you can look at some game CD which usually contains some new version of DirectX.

Ok, I realized it's my fault :) In the last WME build I removed all the hard-coded references to DirectX DLLs, so that the game can user-friendly report that it requires a newer DX version when necessary (instead of some generic Windows error message about missing exports). But somehow I forgot the tools share the same code so now they just crash if DX8 isn't found. Installing DirectX 8 or later should fix the problem.

Heh.  *laughs*  ;)  Alright, I'll try to get my hands on a more recent version of DirectX than version 7.

Yeah, I installed the application saved to my friend's hard-drive (she has Windows XP, and a newer system), and the program works just fine.

I can't help but feel the need to ask... what if even that doesn't work...?  [just kidding]Do I reserve the right to shoot your pinky toe off?[/just kidding]

I'll give it a try.

Thanks for all of your help, gentlemen.

Errr, no, sorry. Because if everyone did that after finding a bug, I'd be long dead by now ;)
