as far as I know you can use theora videos (.ogg), animated sprites (like png secuences) and still images as background.

Feature requests, suggestions / light map
« on: February 09, 2009, 05:37:17 PM »
Hi!
I'm in the process of making my first 2.5D scene. It's almost ready but I still can't find a way to make an effect which would really strengthen the integration of my 3d character and the overall look of the scene. The scene occurs in a cavern very deep down the ocean which is protected from the sea by a gigantic glass. The movement of the water outside changes the lighting of the whole cavern constantly (like pool reflections on a wall) and I've done that in my pre-rendered 3d background (theora video), but what I wanted was to have the character also affected by this light changes, like some parts of the body recieve more lighting than others in a random way. In order to achieve that effect in the pre-rendered background, I basically used a light source mapped with an animated noise effect in 3d max (projector map option), and I was wandering if there is a way to do something similar to the light affecting the character. I've thought of a projector map, or several small light sources, or maybe an animated texture for my character, but maybe one of you knows the best way to do it.
Thank you very much!

Feature requests, suggestions / Re: why not create a little 3d editor?

A little 3d editor like that one would be very nice indeed. I hope it's not too hard to make.

excelente.
Yo soy novato en lo que es wintermute pero hace años que trabajo en 3d y en postproducción. Así que con gusto puedo aportar a este foro en español respecto a esas cosas, como programas, herramientas, técnicas 2d o 3d, etc.
Un saludo!

I'm sorry about the theora quality thing. I forgot to tweak further in the ffdshow thing, I was just using maximum bitrate in the VLC converter.

Still, the fact tha WMplayer plays these videos smoothly and in wintermute it's kinda frameskipped puzzles me.

Well  I did some serious reading xD and now I got another problem. As I suspected, the transition from fullscreen theora to entity theora is not unnoticeable like it is in blade runner transitions. After the fullscreen theora there is two or three black frames til the scene comes with the background-entity theora. I was wondering if there is a way to fix this... it's rather small, but I really need a smooth transition. The thing is that my backgrounds are highly animated and very high quality (they are all prerendered in 3d, with particles, moving lights and stuff) so I can't really do a static background with a few sprites, cause all is moving, specially the lights... I really want to make the transition smooth... Is there a way? here's my code:

Code: WME Script
  1. Game.PlayTheora("scenes\room\cavernaintroLQ.ogg",false);
  2.
  3. var video = Scene.GetNode("background");
  4. video.PlayTheora("scenes\room\cavernaloopLQ.ogg",true);
  5.

As a side note... I'm a bit dissapointed of the theora quality... If I make a video with maximum bitrate at 1024x768 it doesn't play totally smooth (even in fullscreen theora) and quality is not perfect . As I lower the bitrate smoothness gets better but quality goes down and down. As i said there is lots of light movement... so compression is quite noticable, specially in dark areas. Weird thing is that windows media player plays high resolution Theora videos with maximum bitrate smoothly. Any advice here? Why does wintermute play theora videos slower than windows media player? (this happens both in windowed mode and fullscreen, even though in windowed mode I get about 2000 fps and fullscreen is 60)

Thank you.

Technical forum / Theora as entity
« on: January 14, 2009, 01:49:18 AM »
Hi! I have a question which I hope you can answer...
I still don't get the usage of theora videos as entities. I'm still a noob in the scripting language, so a very small tutorial on this would be really nice, specially since I couldn't find any in the forums or in the WME documentation.
to make it less than a tutorial, what I want to do is to have two background videos in a scene, one for the intro of the room (a prerendered camera movement of a 3d scenario), and then one that is looping forever, which goes right after the camera movement is done (so there's only one starting camera movement and then the place has only movement inside, and the actor can come in without worring about perspective)
I know I should probably use a fullscreen video of the intro with the "play.theora" method, and then the looping video as an entity. But is it possible that the transition looks smooth and unoticeable?
I know how to do the play.theora method, but i still don't get how to use a theora video as an entity script-wise. Could someone be so kind to show me how in a script? Like an example of what you gotta do to make an entity a looping theora video after a full screen video?

thank you, thank you, thank you
I promise my game won't dissapoint, it's looking really good :D

I really appreciate your answers.
It turns out that vue's student version has a very ugly watermark. 3d max has some ugly limitations too. I haven't checked maya yet. and there is no student version for combustion. The big problem with student versions is that in most of them you can't save a file and then use it in a full version. In other words I'd had to do everything in the student version or vice versa.
Still, yesterday I was talking with my 3d profesor about this, and he said that there should be no problem as long as I do some of my work at college and if I put the name of my university in the credits.  I would stay in the legal area this way because I'd be part of the university which owns the programs. In the end I'd be using original licenced versions, but I would give myself the posibility to do some work at home. I don't think Autodesk or E-on software looses anything from this, because it would be no gain for them that I sleep in college (cause that would be the only way for me at this point).  I'm not gonna do that sacrifice just so someone's rules are played correctly even if nobody benefits from them. I think rules are only good if they are reasonable and do good. In this case, they would only stop a man from doing an free artistic proyect.
Anyway, I suppose that saying all this is ilegal. So don't buy it, I was just joking. Honestly.
About using milkshape 3d or Blender... I tried them, and honestly, after you know maya or max it's a little depressing to use them. Not that they are not great, but maya and max are perfect, and something that takes 30 minutes to do in blender, I do it in 10 minutes in Maya, and probably prettier. But even if I got the hang of blender, still maya can do more stuff, and I've been using it for 3 years, so I just can't throw away all my expertise in maya away and feel that I learned all that for nothing. I really prefer to work at college overnight instead of not using maya.
So that's what I'm gonna do; I'll do all the work I can at collage, and if I have to bring something home, I'll do it.
But I am joking, obviously. :D        Officialy, I'll do everything at college. I swear. ;)

That's what I supposed...
I'm downloading Vue's student version as we speak. It says "renders MAY be watermarked or carry a logo".  :S
We'll see about it.
Thank you.

Hi everybody! I'm new here. I'm an Animation and visual effects student and right now I'm starting an independent game which I want to do in wintermute :D   . Amazing tool, I'm loving it.

Anyway, I wanted to ask something about licenses. The thing is I am a maya, max, combustion, and many more softwares user (They teach all of them in my career) . They have the original licenses in my university but at home I don't, and if I want to use one program, I have to use a cracked version. The thing is that I want to make my own-pretty-and-short adventure game using these softwares, and I don't think I can do all the work at the university. I don't want to make anything comercial, my intention is to learn by making it and then use it as part of my personal work for when I finish my studies. Still, as you may have guessed, I'm very ignorant in terms of licenses and law problems and such. The main question is: Can I use these programs freely if my game is going to be 100% freeware? Or do I still have to get the original licenses? As far as I know, law applies only if you make money with a software and you are not paying for the license, which is not my case. I'd use student versions but frankly I don't know anything about them (anybody?). If they work and don't have watermarks and such then I'd obviously use them (although I don't know if all program have them).
In short...:
Do I have to use student versions of programs?
work at university?
can I use a cracked program at home for non comercial purposes?
Am I f***ed if a program does not have a student version or if I don't have money?

Well... thanks in advance.
:)
