Butterfly
« on: September 02, 2008, 10:49:45 AM »

Hi everyone, I wanted to put some info about my game that is being currently developed with WME.

"Butterfly" is a dark cyberpunk/s-f story. It takes place in 2099, when almost all remaining humankind has gathered in a dozen huge cities. Each 'Megalopolis' is inhabited by people and androids. The main protagonist (player), John T. Kenner, is an undercover agent who works for one of the big players - a huge corporation, ZEN Technologies. When the prototype chip of advanced AI is stolen from the main corp lab, he is entrusted with a mission - he has to dive into the deepest, God-forsaken Levels of Megalopolis and regain the loss before the competition lay its hands on it. But in the darkness of the "lower world" John will find something far more precious than the chip and he will be forced to re-evaluate concepts like: "humanity", "honour" and "love".

"Butterfly" features:

- interesting (I hope :)) and intriguing story;
- lots of information that will help to understand the reality of the world of 2099 - gathered in player's DataBase, a small personal computer John will carry throughout the game;
- a few main actors and many NPC's;
- first-person view gameplay (that's right :))
- locations 1024x768, all fully rendered in 3D, with addition of some particles/animated sprites;
- over twenty short animated cut-scenes + 2 longer animations (intro/outro). Many will have "special effects" and subtitles. Some spoken dialogues in different languages may appear (done by me and some friends - if I manage to convince them :)
- a few fast-action sequences (timing will be cruical), including two in virtual reality (or 'Global Net' as it is called in 2099);
- music composed especially for the game by a musician (it's the only thing I can't do myself so I begged the guy :)).

The first version of the game will be in Polish (yep, that's my native language :) but I will translate it into English as well (I want it to be "international" ;)) English version will be released probably a few weeks after the Polish one.

I do all of this because I always wanted to make a computer game :) and to practice my cgi/animating/editing/scripting skills. The game will be freeware and available through its "official website". If everything goes according to the plan, "Butterfly" should arrive somewhere in 2009. I will probably release some longer demo earlier, maybe for Christmas. Until then, feel free to check the website:

Appreciate any comments/questions/threats/critics/blessings :)

It looks very interesting, especially to a cyberpunk & sci-fi addict like myself. Looking forward to try a demo (although I don't think I'll have the time to learn polish in the meantime).

For those who are interested  :)

Most sections of the website have been refreshed, new screenshots has been added to "Gallery" and a sample animated cut-scene has appeared in "Multimedia". Soon, a new section will be created, where all important characters from the game will be introduced.

Cheers.

Recently, project has changed a lot. I dropped 3D graphics - everything is now digitally painted. The game play will also change. BF will remain an adventure game but not an ordinary "point-and-click". All the information will be gradually revealed on an up-dated project website: http://butterflygame.blogspot.com. Every post on the website is now both, in Polish and English.

The artstyle is really fantastic, I can't wait to see more.
Are the characters 3D?
Also those drawn backgrounds look 3D :P impressive.

Glad you like it  :) Characters are entirely hand drawn. The backgrounds begin as simple 3D models without textures in Blender (AO, only with lights), than they are created in Photoshop by combining various textures and overpainting.

Thanks, harlock. Yes, I'm doing everything by myself, only music has been composed by another guy.

Absolutly stunning visuals!
Cant wait to see it in motion!

Do you use 3d or 2d for your characters? the first and last picture have drawn characters while in the second picture it looks like they are 3d models.

Thanks, guys. All characters are drawn in 2D. In each case, I try to make them look like they are part of the scene, by drawing shadows as best as I can and applying some light effects. Sometimes it's more convincing, sometimes less :) Oh, well...  ;)
