Future Mac OSX support
« on: July 05, 2005, 11:53:30 PM »

Hello Mnemonic,
now are 2 days I'm learning WME, and it's what I need for begin my
"life's" project.

I think that when Apple will launch the new Intel based Macs,
the computer world will change again, and Windows will be not
the only choice for no-console gamers.

So I think a MacOSX support will be a right think to promote WME.
Maybe just a "player" and not all the toolkit.
But I know that it's a BIGGER work.

So...

Thanks again and Congratulation for WME.

The DirectX based graphics system will always be a HUGE problem. I think it would be almost impossible to port the WME engine into a Mac platform  :-\

Impossible no  ;)... but it would take a HUGE amount of work to change graphics rendering subsystem to openGL. So althought I'd love to see multiplaform support I understand that it's not going to happen in the next years if not ever.

EDIT: There are some other things that must be changed also but they are not as big as the graphics rendering core. Oh... and ofcourse i'm talking about the interprenter and not the tools which are in no way portable.

That doesn't mean that MacOS-intel will be in any way compatible with windows or that it will make porting of apps like wme easier.

Obviusly,
a MAC with Intel inside will be ever a MAC,
but the Intel processor make easier the development of application such games for both the platform (WIN/ MAC).
This will be possible only if the engine will be written using OGL...

I wrote my wish to see WME for mac, beacuse Mac users have been played GraphicAdventure
from Apple II, so there are many people happy to play (and Buy, maybe ;) ) games made by WME.

I would like to see WME on Mac as well but I was just wondering does it work for linux? I run all 3 platforms at home and I tend to be pretty adament about getting whatever I decide to create onto as many platforms as possible. :). Particularly from a WME standpoint if you have this running well on Linux and Mac the influx of new designers could be great. There are never many good games available for either of those platforms and the ability to create multi platform games would be a massive boost to WME popularity. Having said that if the development of this engine is based solely on DirectX it would take a lot of work to allow for native suppport on either of those platforms.

Currently WME code isn't very porting-friendly. There are many windows-specific bits here and there, and it's not just about DirectX. Actuallly, the renderer itself should be relatively easy to replace, since WME already uses two different renderers so the rendering code is separated from the rest of the system (at least the 2D part).
I will probably clean the code in respect to better portability some time in the future, but currently it's not a priority.

Currently, you can run WME games on Linux using CEDEGA (more info).
Mac port is not likely to happen though, at least not from me, because I don't have a Mac, no one around here has a Mac, and I know absolutely nothing about Mac development. Personally I'd be more interested in PocketPC port.

PocketPC port would be interesting though I think that with the recent release of the PSP it would be a better platform for the WME to be ported to. Particularly as the chances of any Adventure games to be created for that platform is minimal and the number of PSP's in circulation will be very high.

Unfortunately porting to consoles is extremely expensive as you need licenses and devkits from the manufacturers wich they don't give away for free.

Hehe yeah I forgot about that. Could always wait for the Linux crowd to hack the platform :P

[edit]

I found this link though Im not sure what the license requirements are.
