Few quick questions about Wintermute
« on: March 15, 2010, 10:23:00 AM »

Hi all, I've been looking around for an engine that can handle what I want to throw at it. Wintermute sounds almost too good to be true so I thought I would ask you guys for some input. I've been involved with a number of game projects as an artist, and it's always my ideas vs the engine so I just want to get a few details out of the way first.

1. Animated menus/GUI, how far could I go there, if at all? From a simple mouse over effect on buttons to sound effects and flashy animations, any limits?

2. 2.5D. I don't want to use 3D characters on a 2D background...I want to use 2D Characters on a 3D background ;P This doesn't seem like it would be a big deal but a few engines I've looked at weren't really set-up for that and it caused some issues.

That's all, thanks for any input.

1. Yes you can Animate menus and GUI, even using videos as backgrounds.

2. Not possible. only 3D Chars on 2D Backgrounds are possible.

Actually, I think it IS possible to do the 3d backgrounds with 2d characters. If you load a 3d actor as your scene it should work.

Wintermute wasn't designed for that though.

Thanks guys.  :)

Yeah I had a feeling it would be an issue.

I'm working on a side scrolling / adventure / platform game, wanted a nice perspective effect/camera zoom as you ran through the levels. Don't seem to be many ways of accomplishing this so far with dedicated 2D or 3D engines.

Actually, I believe it should be achievable with any 3D engine, if your 2D actors are just textured quads (or billboards) placed in the 3D world.
