Software and games / Sanitarium - only for weird players!
« on: July 31, 2003, 06:41:24 PM »
Have you played the adventure game called "Sanitarium"? It's a really great game, that every weird-person (like me) should play. It's a psychological & physical horror adventure game (think about something between Lovecraft and Poe) with great isometric graphics. For me it's one of the three best horror adventure games I have ever played (the other two are "Alone in the dark 1" and "Shadow of the comet" by infogrames - now Atari).

Since we started to talk about monkey island games check out this page to find out your pitate's name.

http://www.fidius.org/quiz/pirate.php

My name is "Mad Roger Flint". And the description is : "Every pirate is a little bit crazy. You, though, are more than just a little bit. Like the rock flint, you're hard and sharp. But, also like flint, you're easily chipped, and sparky. Arr!"

LOL

Ok'y mates, from on you should all call me Mad odnorf. Yeah... I am officially a crazy pirate now...

Feature requests, suggestions / different directory for package(s)
« on: July 26, 2003, 10:24:26 AM »
I would like the wme.exe interprenter to search for the data files not only in the same dir it is executed but also in a /data/   dir
I am asking this, because I am thinking of splitting my project in many smaller packages, and I wouldn't like my game's dir to have 50 files inside (like all the old dos games). Now... I understand that you might find strange the fact that I would like to split my project, but this method has one big IMO advantage : when you finish and upload/distribute you project and AFTER you find a few bugs then you can update only the neccessary files (for example the scripts.dcp) and not all the game (with the graphics, music, sounds, etc). If this method has any disadvantages that I can't think now please say so.

Feature requests, suggestions / transperancy
« on: July 17, 2003, 10:07:40 AM »
This might already exist, but I would like a method/function to Set the Transperancy of an entity/sprite with values from 0 to 100 (like in photoshop). Something like

SpriteExample.SetTransperancy(70);

General Discussion / remote control software ? is the any?
« on: July 16, 2003, 05:04:47 PM »
I have the tvtuner, pinnacle pctv pro which has a remote control (a great one, with 50 buttons). I am wondering if there is any programmable remote control software to use the remote control with any program I would like (basically for my audio, video & dvd software players). I have search the net but I can find any.

EDIT: I have found one here -> http://www.irassistant.com/dotcom/v_current/ but it seems that it hasn't been updated since 2001.... searching for something newer.... any help appriciated

Feature requests, suggestions / small suggestion for debug mode
« on: July 08, 2003, 10:53:31 AM »
I would like the engine to show the exact name of the scripts that are running when it's in debug mode. (maybe a different option in ProjectMan for people that wouldn't like that).

Feature requests, suggestions / shift-click in sprite manager
« on: July 07, 2003, 04:37:07 PM »
I wanted to delete 5 frames from of sprite and I had to manually delete them 1 by 1. I think that the shift & mouse click that selects more that 1 file might be usefull here.

Technical forum / small question for debug mode

In the debug mode, the engine displayes how many scripts are running... but what are the r, w, p means?

Technical forum / Savegames folder
« on: July 07, 2003, 10:37:34 AM »
I notice that the "Fred prealpha version" stores it's savegames in the game's dir while my project's savegames are stores in my profile's dir (I am using win2000). I might be blind but I can't find a way to do something like that for my project too. ?!?!?

Oh...  and if someone creates a game that has different profiles (selectable while in-game), is there a way to specify different folder's for each profile in the game's dir?

Software and games / Jack Orlando
« on: July 02, 2003, 12:24:54 PM »
I am just playing "Jack Orlando : a cinematic adventure, the director's cut edition" and I have to say that it has A LOT of character animations!!! In fact it has more character animations than 3-4 regular adventure games! It's really impressive. :)

I haven't played it much yet (just for 30 minutes) but I have found 2 small bad things : the speech is not as good as the graphics, the interface is a little strange, and one REALLY bad thing : it is using the windows save system (remember myst & riven) which I hate. :(

PS. This game was never pulished in Greece, and the copy I have is from a greek magazine (magazines are a very good way to buy good games for a very cheap price, that is ofcouse if you don't care if the game is 2-3-4 years old - and I don't).

Technical forum / wme crashes : bug or drivers problem?
« on: June 19, 2003, 04:46:48 PM »
With the last 3 versions (including build29) I am experiencing some crashes. It happens after I exit dreams. It doesn't crash all the time but 1 out of 10. About the same time that wme crashed for the first time I have updated my radeon's drivers and the directx, so this is possible a problem with the drivers and not with the wme.

Text from the wme_crash.txt:

I have to add that it's not the wme interprenter (wme.exe) that crashes but the project manager (with the same log every time).

My graphics card is an ATI Radeon 9000pro 120MB, and I am using the latest catalyst drivers (3.4) and the latest directx version (9.0). Is there anyone with the same configuration to test it please?

EDIT: I forgot to say that I think (but I am not 100%) that this happens when the project manager is "previewing" a scene, and not when the preview panel is empty.

Software and games / fraps
« on: June 18, 2003, 05:11:44 PM »
OK... this has nothing to do with adventure creation but it could be usefull in adventure presentation, to create rolling demos.

http://www.fraps.com/

It's a free directx/opengl capture program. But the unique feature is that it doesn't only capture screenshots but also can capture videos in real-time (if you have a stong computer). At this point it can only capture at 640x480 but the next version (non free :( ) version will be able to capture even at 1024x768.

If you know any other program (free or not-free) that can do the same, please let me know.

General Discussion / "far" vs "total commander" :)
« on: June 15, 2003, 11:43:59 PM »
(total commander is at least as powerfull as far

That's questionable ;) Hehe, let's start a flame war! ;D

HEY! I am trying really hard not to make every thread off-topic! :) Try to help me :) :) :) :) :) (That's the reason, why I post it here :) :) :) :) :) )

Back in action again: Really? Can we start our own private flaming war? :) I am joking ofcourse.... :) :) :) :) :)

Oh, and I found a 7zip plugin also (among with some other excellent plugins, including the syntax hightlightiing one).
If anyone is interested visit http://www.maxwish.tk/
It has A LOT of plugins for tc.

The only thing that we can't change is that "total commander" has a "windows user interface" while "far" has a console (=agly IMHO :)) interface! :) ;D ;D ;D ;D

PS. I am not feeling good to advertise those two shareware programs! :) Is there any good opensource alternate? (linux has the console mc...)
PS2. I just notice that there are a lot of smilies into this post!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
PS3. Maybe it's a good idea, the posts in the "general category" don't count as posts for the members with all those off-topic threads! :) :) :) :)

Software and games / VIM
« on: June 15, 2003, 05:41:47 PM »
Vim is IMHO the best text editor on the planet. It has systax hightlighting for EVERY language anyone can think of, and has hundends of features (which almost nobody on the planet uses :)). I use it for everything on my computer.

check it out - www.vim.org

It's coming from the unix world and ofcourse it's opensource (yeah, almost all the programs I use on windows are opensource :)).

Oh... and a few advices if you are not a unix-lover. Download the gvim package (vim with graphical user interface) and NOT the vim. Also use the "gvim easy" icon to start it or else I don't think that you will like it (unix users can be weird on they way they work). :)

Oh... and just for the fun of it... go to syntax menu -> show filetypes in menu, and check the various syntax highlighs it supports.
