General Discussion / Old games interprenters
« on: June 14, 2003, 02:06:33 PM »
Ok... those are interprenters (which means the .exe) for old games. Most of them are opensource and runs on many OS. And some of them are not 100% finished yet.

SCUMMVM - www.scummvm.org - For Lucasarts adventures that use the scumm engine and also for "Beneath a steel sky" and Simon 1 & 2.

LBAVM - http://www.yaz0r.net/lba.php - For "little big adventure"

SARIEN - http://sarien.sourceforge.net/ - For old sierra games that use the AGI engine

NAGI - http://www.agidev.com/nagi.html - The same as sarien but with 2 differences : 1)it has better support for some games, 2)it's closed source

FREESCI - http://freesci.linuxgames.com/ - For sierra games that use the SCI engine (there is some new progress for the SCI32 engine too)

XU4 - http://xu4.sourceforge.net/ - For Ultima 4

NUVIE - http://nuvie.sourceforge.net/ - For Ultima 6

EXULT - http://exult.sourceforge.net/ - For Ultima 7

YARN - http://yarn.sourceforge.net/ - For the games "Inherit the Earth" and "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream" (they both use the same engine)

FREEKYRA - http://sourceforge.net/projects/freekyra/ - For the Kyrandia games but it seems dead. But it's opensource, so other developers might want to help someday.

That's all I know! Are there any other interprenters that I don't know of?

Software and games / Gabriel Knight series
« on: June 13, 2003, 10:08:29 PM »
Yeah.. I know all three games from the trilogy are not new but they are great. I just found  "Gabriel Knight 2" on a DVD (it was 6cds!), and I am playing it for the first time in my life. It uses the same crappy engine (it won the price of the CRAPPIEST engine for me) as Phantasmagoria did but it's MUCH BETTER. It's the only game with real characters and backgrounds that I like! Ofcourse I have to add that GK1 & 3 are also excellent games...

PS. I have read somewhere that the creator of GK series (Jane Jensen) is working on a new terror-mystery-fantasy adventure game (but not a GK4).... I am really looking forward to play it... (edit: see below for a link)

EDIT: After a few days I decided to change the 7CDs with the correct 6CDs.... And I also correct a few typos.

Software and games / old lucasarts games
« on: June 12, 2003, 10:11:28 AM »
I don't know if you have played all lucasarts adventure games, but now is the time to do so. There is a tool called scummvm which is an opensource (GPL) interprenter for all the scumm games (and 3 non-scumm games - Simon the Sorcerer 1 & 2, beneath a steel sky) at www.scummvm.org. With it I played for the first time the loom cd version which has excellent speech! :) I have to add that scummvm can run in almost any OS you can think (even on palms). So you can play the first three monkeys (the fourth is not a scummvm game but an GrimE game) in your beos for example..  ;D

Oh... I forget... one week ago I bought the new lucasarts entertainment pack, and I am playing Sam 'n Max with speech for the first time and it's great (now I have "The dig" and "Full throttle" in two original packs!)

PS. There are interprenters for Sierra's old AGI and SCI games... If someone is interested into those, just ask and I'll give you the links.

Feature requests, suggestions / scaling the game
« on: June 04, 2003, 09:39:36 PM »
Mnemonic, do you think that it could be possible to scale the game in other resolutions than the specified one (when I run my game in direct3d). For example dreams is made in 800x600 but I would like (for some crazy reasons) to be able to play it in 640x480. I don't mind if the images get a little blured.

General Discussion / City2 suggestion for Musta
« on: June 02, 2003, 12:04:56 PM »
I decided to post that in a new thread because the "dreams anouncement" thread has gone pretty off-topic! Which is something common here with me and Jerrot. :)

Anyway, what I wanted to say is a small suggestion for the City2 graphics. In the second picture (pic2.jpg) in the wall I can clearly see that the artist had used a photoshop filter, and I don't like to identify the "ready for use by anyone" filters in someones work. It make me say "hey, look here is photoshop filter". Maybe it's just me as a graphic designer that I don't like those filters because I have seen them hundrends of times. My suggestion is to replace the filter with something "hand-made" like the rest of this great picture. Feel free to ignore my suggestion if you think that the way it is now is better.

Game announcements / Dreams first public beta demo v0.1 released!
« on: May 30, 2003, 03:38:43 PM »
Yeah, it's here...!!!! :) :) :)
It's just a demo so it doesn't have many puzzles yet, the character is not fully finished and it doesn't have music or sound effects.

All together are about 30MBs. It took me hours to upload them with my stupid and ancient 56kbps modem. The files are multi-volume rar3.x archives. A great, free and opensource tool to decompress them is www.7-zip.com

You should run the game in 32bit colors or one scene would not be displayed as it should.

If anyone wants the scripts, the manual in greater resolution or anything else, just ask.

sample pictures of the game:

I would like to thank Jerrot for the web space. Without him I wouldn't be able to upload it. I would also like to thank mnemonic for his great engine.

EDIT 17/9/03 : I'd like to thank my friend NotHere for the new webspace.

Feature requests, suggestions / ogg speex & matroska container
« on: May 19, 2003, 12:09:41 PM »
I  guess you already know them.

ogg speex : www.speex.org
It's a codec for speech, with very small bitrates. It would be ideal for amateur adventure games and a better solution than ogg vorbis for speech. It's also part of the xiph.org, it's patent free and has the same bsd-like licence as vorbis codec.

matroska container : http://www.matroska.org/
It's a great, new opensource container with capabilities that you can't find in the old avi container. It's getting bigger and bigger in the last months (many programs support it already, you may wish to check www.doom9.org). It's under a dual licence and you have to contact the authors to get the licence to implement it into WME.

Technical forum / Bug in ProjectMan

When I select a "package" (the one I got) and give it a description, that description doesn't saved in the .wpr file.

Feature requests, suggestions / Create rolling demo - replay
« on: May 14, 2003, 11:16:38 AM »
Well, that sounds a little crazy, but I would like a method that it will create a demoXXXX.script when I play my game with everything that is happening (including curson movement). That would be really cool for creating easy "rolling demos" without having to create big (and of bad quality) mpeg or divx movies (using a video capture program).

Feature requests, suggestions / "Backup Project"
« on: May 09, 2003, 04:06:20 PM »
How about a tool fot "backup the project" in the ProjectMan. Maybe even an option to autobackup on "ProjectMan exit". This maybe sound like a low priority option but it's not. I did some stupid things today (don't ask :) ) and I almost delete my project (I actually delete half of it but I saved it throught recycle bin).

Feature requests, suggestions / suggestion for debugging mode
« on: May 09, 2003, 12:49:24 PM »
In debuggin mode I would like the scene's name to be displayed on screen along with all the other information. When you have a lot of backgrounds this would be helpfull.

General Discussion / jerrot questions about 3D characters
« on: May 09, 2003, 12:40:43 PM »
Well, it dependes on how good you want your characters. If you want great - professional looking characters (syberia is good example) then you have to learn a 3D program and create it yourself. Which is going to be REALLY difficult especially if you want to animate him later. Now, if you just want a simple 3D character (like the one in the wme demo) then you can use a program named POSER. It has a few built-in characters, and sime clothes. All you have to do is make the animation (it even has a build-in walk animator) and maybe a texture. This is the method I am using (I don't have the time to draw a character right now, but maybe later).

PS. If I am not mistaken, mnemonic used Poser for the character in the wme demo. At least it looks like a character which is rendered in poser.

General Discussion / First Translation for WME (Greek)
« on: May 06, 2003, 02:07:40 PM »
Hooray..... it's finally here...

http://master.math.upatras.gr/~odnorf/greek_wme.zip

I haven't translated a few important words in the engine because I think that this is better. Those words are : master index, string table, package, speech, savegames, inventory, definition, items, project, actor, entity, scene, script, sprite, window, font. If anyone uses it and finds mistakes or have any suggestions (like wants to translate those few words) please contact me.

General Discussion / question for GR translation
« on: May 04, 2003, 09:12:17 PM »
What this "master index" is? And what does it do?

Have you finished the manual concerning the "response window"? I would like to have it's full description because I don't know how to tranlate it.

What this line do "str0116   Initializing filters...".
What are the filters? Are the ones that we found in
the project's settings window?

Where those 2 lines used?
str1023   Script up
str1024   Script down

There are 2 more problems :
http://master.math.upatras.gr/~odnorf/erro8.png

1 is old, and 2 are new... For the second (new) one I need 11 letters... Maybe it would be better if you place those three above the boxes with the files.
