DAZ3d just announced that the soon to be released version 6 of Carrara comes with both Driectx Im- and Exporter (geometry, materials, skinning, animation) - maybe an alternative for people who still haven't found the right modelling software for their 2.5d project.

Sorry - mistake.
Yesterday DAZ announced that it was a communication error between the developers and marketing - DirectX im/export was planned, but didn't made it into the final release.
-
Too bad. Maybe in the next version then?

Not sure, I asked at the forum but didn't get a reply yet. AFAIK there were plans for FBX and/or Collada, too, but I don't know if any of them were done - maybe Dx Im/export even comes with a 6.x update or as a plugin ... unfortunately, DAZ's information politic is very lousy, so customers usually don't get informed about anything before it happened already.

I can understand that :)

They go a bit too far on that :-) When they released Bryce 6 last year they didn't tell anyone for about 4 weeks ;-)

Ok, to make the confusion perfect: Dx- Im/Export now IS a part of the Carrara initial release, it's just not able to export Poser-content - which is unnecessary anyway.

Some news :-)
I bought my update to C6 Pro today, and Dx Im/Export is available (only in the Pro-Version though).
I just started to work with it, and the import seems to be clumsy, at least I could neither import Trinity nor another .x-model I have - I'll try more if I find other models.
Export seems to work though, although I'm not sure if it supports Animation Sets too - I never used Carrara for character animation so far, so I know next to nothing about naming animations and so on. But the general export works and I could open an exported model in WME.
I'll keep you informed if I find out more.
