1280x800?
« on: October 16, 2009, 01:16:18 AM »

What do you guys think of that res?
Would it prevent some players from playing?
I know that it looks good for both Widescreen and Standard.

It works with most monitors (19-20) and with most notebooks so it's a good choice. Everything higher for widescreen will cause problems.

EDIT: And of course link1 and link2  ::beer

Of course, it's posible that this res prevent some players from playing, but it's a common res in modern computers.

Another resolution that is common is 1366 x 768 (Full HD), a lot of graphics cards support this resolution and is habitually in laptops.

Actually 1366x768 (which is small HD or HD ready but not full HD) will prevent the majority of players to play it. It's a monitor and not a gpu issue (also explained in the links I posted).

Sorry, as you say 1366x768 NOT is a Full HD is HD Ready  ;).

I'm in disappointment with "It's a monitor and not a gpu issue", the WXGA (Wide XGA) is a standar that support resolutions in 16:9 and 16:10 aspect ratios. The horizontal resolutions are between 1440 and 1280 and vertical resolutions are between 720 and 900. The resolutions supported are: 1440 x 900, 1152x864, 1280x768, 1280x800, 1280 x 960 and 1366x768b (I think that don't have forgotten none). The WXGA Graphics cards supports one or more of this resolution, of course, the best graphics card suppor all of this resolutions, the limit can be the monitor.

Now, (this only my experience in Spain) there are a lot of laptop that support HD Ready resolution with graphics cards with 512 Mb of dedicate memory. I'm not sure if it's a local thing

I put the results of one recent survey:

These are the results of Steam hardware survey of August 2009.

So according to latest steam hardware survey 52% of people are excluded from your game audience if you chose 1366x768. And those are mostly action players who usually have more modern hardware. I say it's safe to assume that a fixed resolution of anything above 1280x1024 is catastrophic for a 2D adventure according to those % (if they have any real value).

Yes, according with this survey, the HD Ready resolution can't be the better option. I think that the better option can be 1280 x 720, this is a 16:9 aspect ratio (1280 x 1024 is a 5:4 aspect ratio  ??? ??? ???) and is supported by the majority graphics cards. With this resolution the game can run in the 80% of the computers (depending on "other" category).

As you say, it's necesary know how to has been realized the survey (resolutions used or resolutions supported? monitor limits or graphics card limits?, etc.), and if her results are extrapolated to the computers of the adventure gamers.

As far as I know, and I have tested on 30~40 PC's and about 20 Laptops from friends and family, 1280x800 had absolutely no problems on any of them.

I'm very happy with 1280x800, and have not seen any problems with that either. Of course some might not be able to play it, which is the case with any Resolution, but 1280x800 is a pretty good resolution that is supported by the huge majority of players. It's my choice too for my game.

1280 x 800 is a common resolution but the difference with 1280 x 720 is minimal (there are practically identical) and the % of the users (acording the Steam survey) is increased in 2.77 % (plus the corresponding part of "other" category).

I've been looking for statistics with a significant sample, about resolution and colors in the web, there are yet a significant quantity of users, that using a 1024 x 768 res.

I've the found the following (the first is the more complet sample 160 million of users):

In this case it won't make a difference if you use 1280x800 (which is more common for laptops) or 1280x720 (unless you use scrolling scenes - which will work in both cases - in which case the whole widescreen idea is lost).

I'm having hard time with choosing the final resolution for my project as well. After doing some research I struggle between 1280x800 and 1280x768.

I heard that 1280x800 is very popular. However, my new laptop can go 1366x768 tops, it can't use "anythingx800". Similarly, all panoramic monitors in my office (of different brands) can't go "higher" than 768 as well, so I'm not so sure about this 800.

On the other hand, 1280x768, although appearently not very popular, for pre-rendered WME games seems to be just fine. All laptops I've recently seen and newer panoramic screens have this resolution available. My regular screen (not a panoramic one and not that new) also supports it. And if someone use higher resolution, WME will just add black stripes, right?

So what about 1280x768? Would there be any actual problems with it?

No, if the graphic card support 1280 x 800 also support 1280 x 768 and the game can be used in other computers that support greater resolutions like HD Ready

If you use 1280 x 768 the game will be playable for more users that if you use 1280 x 800 and...
If you use 1280 x 720 the game will be playable for more users that if you use 1280 x 768.

No, if the graphic card support 1280 x 800 also support 1280 x 768

Nope. Don't count on that. 1280x800 is more standard, and there are different notebooks that support 1280x800 but not 1280x768 for example.
