Hi muties,
as it didn't work quite as expected, I've made some corrections myself and thus opening the book for public usage. Note that it's a work in progress as mentioned in older threads.
Find the link here and enjoy. I expect your comments below the articles if any. ::beer ::beer ::beer

Just found this 20 minutes ago and started reading. Thank you very much, from what I have seen it is very useful for everyone that is serious on getting into Wintermute :)
Bookmarked it!

Good work!!! It's excellent!!!

Hey meta great work! I'm going to start reading the book now and I'll send my comments later (I hope...)
One question, I would like to translate the online book to Spanish (slowly cause I haven't much time and I don't know how far I'll be able to go) ¿how can I do that?
Greetings.

I added Spanish to the list of languages. To translate any page, click the "es" button in the upper-right corner. Then create new page and you can start editing it (perhaps copy the source of the original page as a starting point).
To login, use the same username/password you're using for this forum. Be sure to check the "Remember me" check-box, so that you're not logged out while editing an article.

I've added the Preface spanish translation (by the way now the english appears as 'es' instead of 'en').
I'm not a perfect translator cause my english is not very good so if anyone finds a better translation please do the changes needed.
I'll try to translate 1 page each day (or two days) but I can't promise it.
Greetings.

Hi, again I've translated to Spanish yet: Preface, Resource, and Getting to know what WME is.
One more question: when you select the 'es' version, the table of contents of the WME Book Online is hidden. Can anyone solve this matter? Is there any way that I can translate the Table Of Contents too?
Thanks in advance for all.
-
I'd like to translate the Book to Korean! Actually, I did it little in my personal/secret wiki already.
Could you add Korean to the list, Mnemonic? :)

Sure thing! :)

Yes, you need to edit the following page: http://res.dead-code.org/doku.php/es:wmebook:sidebar
The original table of contents page is: http://res.dead-code.org/doku.php/wmebook:sidebar

Sure thing! :)
Thank you! :)

Im reading through the book now. Thank you so much, its exactly what a programming afraid artisty type like me
needs. Usually the word script sends cold chills down my spine, now I feel a sense of calm settling in.
It is very accessable and easy to understand. Fantastic writing.
God bless you!
All the Best

Hi Metamorphium,
I would like to contribute graphics and proof reading to the Wme programming book effort.
I'm a complete beginner so I would like to ask a few questions the parts that I have found a little hard to understand,
then I could add that information into the manuscript, with your permission of course.
Here is a graphic I made for the "keypad" example in the scripting chapter.
I'm really excited, the book is helping me a lot.
Please Pm me if you are interested.

Mega respect for the book, Meta!!!
You're doing a great job! We won't forget it.

Hi, I'm starting to read the book. I think I found a small error in the last script (exit.script) in Chapter 3.
#include "scripts\base.inc"
on "ActorEntry"
{
var door = Scene.GetNode("Door");
Game.Interactive = false;
global doorClicked;
if (doorClicked)
{
actor.Talk("I don't want to return to my flat before I am sure I can't enter the warehouse!");
}
else
{
Scene.DetachScript("scenes\warehouse\scr\bomb.script");
actor.Talk("Phew. That was close");
Game.ChangeScene("scenes\room\room.scene");
}
Game.Interactive = true;
}
Line in red must be: if (!doorClicked)
Am I right? Greetings !!!
-
You're right. Thanks for the bug catch, it's repaired now.
-
This is excellent! I was worried that there weren't enough examples/documentation for Wintermute but then I found this :)
Tiny errors I noticed in Chapter 2:
file test1.script
global a = 10;
Game.Msg(a); //prints 10
file test1.script
global a = a + 1;
Game.Msg(a); //prints 11, because the variable is valid for the whole game.
I'm pretty sure you meant the second one to say test2.script- There are two Syntax Rule no.4's and two no.5's
- At the end of 2.5 Includes, there is a seemingly unrelated snippet of code
And also I had a couple of questions:
BUG: Don’t use loops inside of the case branches. They don’t work. If you need, write a function (explained later) which will contain the loop. This workaround works.
So that's a bug with the Wintermute engine? What about using }else if{ instead of a switch, wouldn't that be quicker than writing a function?Never initialize your variables in the include files. They will get reinitialized with every inclusion of your script.
Is it a good idea to put your global variables in an include file (e.g. "global myVar;") so that you can get/set the value without having to remembering to write global before it the first time you reference it in each script?
Thanks!
-
Thanks, fixed. Funny, nobody mentioned before the unrelated code (was from my original book).
So that's a bug with the Wintermute engine? What about using }else if{ instead of a switch, wouldn't that be quicker than writing a function
It's a bug in wme engine. To If/Else imagine having 10 different states:
if (a=="blue")
{
//do something
}
else
if (a="red")
{
//do something
}
etc.. etc..
will always look worse than:
switch(a)
{
case "red":
// Do something
break;
case "blue":
// Do something
break;
// etc...
}
But you can use both and sometimes you have to.
Is it a good idea to put your global variables in an include file (e.g. "global myVar;") so that you can get/set the value without having to remembering to write global before it the first time you reference it in each script?
I use it for variables I refer often to. For variables which need to be global but I use them only once or twice in the whole game (various game states) I use the normal inscript declaration.
The comment was to warn before having in base.inc for example:
global MyVariable = 0;
This would ALWAYS reset the variable to 0 every inclusion (so no chance to setting something reasonable).
Even worse is to have:
global MyObject = new Object("path to object"); which would create a new memory object everytime any script runs. This will very soon cause the game to eat all RAM and is sometimes a big problem of newcomer's games.

Do anyone took an effort to translate it to russian? Theoreticaly, i can help
-
Just posting here to show my appreciation for the book, I've just started a project o wintermute and it's being a huge help. Keep up the good work ( please do !!!) ;D
-
Howdy,
Looks like good work and I want to read it through. Is there a link to download this complete ??
kind regards, markpouncey
-
No, as far as I know, there's only the online version. You'd need to use some mass-downloader.
-
Consider yourself loved!
Metaphorically at least...
;D

Hi,
I would like to make a translation of the book in French. I know that it is a bit old, but as far as i know, the next WME's major release, is not for now, so i think it can worth it.
How can i create a new page ?
Thank you :)
PS : I reassure you, my French is really better than my English :D
-
I added French to the list of languages. If you are logged in, there should be a "Create page" button when you arrive to a non-existent page (such as when you click the "fr" link in the top-right corner).
Be sure to edit the new page, not the original english page. The language selector is somewhat buggy, and sometimes it displays your language ("fr" in your case) twice, also instead of the "en" link.

Indeed, there was no tab "en", it was "fr", now i can see an other tab "fr", so i can start :)

Hello !
In the project manager, in the section "Savegame settings", there is two fields named : Thumbnail width, Thumbnail height.
I don't quite understand what they're doing.
Does someone knows ?
Thank you :P
-
They specify the size of thumbnails for savegames in pixels (width & heigh = 2 dimensions).
-
Ok, now i understand, it's the size of a small screen shot of the game, that you can display in the load save screen.
Thank you for the explanation.
-
Excellent work metamorphium! I have advertised your book to other fellow wintermute noobs and use it regularly until I learn the engine. Please continue this excellent work. I am really looking forward to the Going 2.5D chapter. If you require any sort of help (the best I can give is greek translation and english proof reading) just pm me.
-
Sadly the last topic in the WME Book is from 2008/01/10 14:25 :'( I'd really appreciate if you keep going. WME2 could still take some time from what I read, your work wouldn't be wasted!
-
it's just a matter of time unfortunately. Maybe this summer I can finish a bit more.
-
I really hope you'll be able to :o. It would be a big help. :D

I, certainly, dug up an old topic... ;)
Hi Rens! I saw you've start to translate the WME book. Good idea, everybody know that french people are lazy :P (I'm french too)
I've two questions for you:
-first, can you tell me if you continue the translation or not? Just to know if I should wait.
-second, Does the french translation of the string table and hints of ProjectMan could interest you? Because I've doing it.
Thank for the work still made by you and by Metamorphium (Original text)
-
...Does the french translation of the string table and hints of ProjectMan could interest you? Because I've doing it...
You can send the the translations to Mnemonic (wme developer) and he'll add them to the download page with the other languages.
-
I've send it, I hope it will help someone. ;)
Because I've got any answer from Rens ... I think he is too busy ... I've made a some of the french translation of the Book online. So French guy you've got no excuses to do a good work ;D If someone find some erreur of translation, tell me what. Thank.
Note : It was very interresting to translate it, because I've discovered and learned WME in the same time, and it seems very powerfull and not so difficult to use ::thumbup. Now I'll start my first little small minimal game to try it :)
-
ok j'ai traduit en français "finetuning the game" je l'envoie en mode texte à mnemonic
