Night Train - Demo ready for boarding!
« on: June 11, 2010, 11:49:09 AM »

After some mild panic, lack of sleep and even more panic... I'm glad to say that a demo is finally ready for you to see! Think of this as an early beta as there are a few things still to iron out. Any feedback you can give will be greatly appreciated as this is my very first outing as a game maker.

Download the demo here - http://www.xportmedia.co.uk/games.html

The voice was provided by Trisha Jarman, the game engine is the rather wonderful wintermute. All graphics, design, code and music is by myself.

Atmosphere is very good. Will there be puzzles/actions in it or just narration?
And a little suggestion. You should consider adding subtitles.

Subtitles are already being added - It was a bit of an oversight on my part. :(

There are two puzzles that you can access.  These are done via the pictures, they act as memories.  You can move about memories using images that you find, but not all pictures are links.  :)  Hopefully you'll work it out.

Thanks for playing anyway!

I have already "moved through" the paintings to enable new memories. Are you talking about this or something else?

Just played through, really well done. Looks great, I especially liked the floating fog/lens flares on top of the scenes. I assume those dark spots on the walls mean there will be quite a few more levels in the finished product?

It is a bit mysterious until you "find" the puzzles, but then it clicks. The one-click interface reminds me of Myst... just click around until you get an idea of what to do. Maybe some guide or hint would help people navigate?

******SPOILER ALERT******
Finding the desk was the key for me: perhaps that would be a good entry point to the scene? I spent a while looking around the walls before noticing the desk in the center of each room.

Probably need to flag people's attention so that they get to the puzzles.  Thanks for pointing this out!  Need to get thinking cap on...  ???

Great job!
Just finished the demo. I thought it was well done and the puzzles were easy to spot. I think something to record her discovers would be good. A book or something that her father/mother gave her (a diary maybe?).
This way if the player wants to go back and see the story they recieved from finishing the puzzles they can. I found myself forgetting some of the dialogue after I solved the puzzle and moved on.

Look forward to playing the full version.

A very good idea!!  In fact a great idea :)  I played it through lately and noticed that the mother puzzle can be difficult to get back to having saved half way...  This is a great solution.  Think you should get a credit for that.

Thanks

very atmospheric, of course it's the kind of game you need to immerse yourself in to get anything like the full effect, and by it's nature your not going to get that in a very short demo - I am envious of your artistic talent.
