Dark Fall Adventure Game - Indie developer
« on: January 07, 2005, 04:46:25 AM »

Since most of you are pretty savvy with the adventure games out there already, I have been impressed with the line of adventure games created by Jonathan Boakes who created the Dark Fall series of adventure games.  He is a one man show, doing all the graphics and programming (using Macromedia Director).  His games got picked up by the Adventure Company for publishing but it does show you that on your own you can create and sell and be fairly successful.

On his website he has a lot of information including a tutorial on creating an interactive game, here is the URL:

http://www.xxvproductions.co.uk/darkfall2/creation.html

He has some intriguing puzzles in his games and great graphics and sound effects.  He does use actors for voices and has hired some musicians for minor background music.  Great stereo effects with the headphones on, at one point a dog barked and I thought there was actually a dog outside my door.

When I see his works I get inspired in my own game programming efforts...

Cheers,

Preston

Yeah "Dark Fall" is definetely an inspiring and encouraging indie adventure game. It makes you think "I can do it too." Especially after the Adventure Company actually fund and publish "Dark Fall 2".

EDIT:Change "fund" word after Jonathans post.

Both games are definitely worth playing. Many studios should learn from Jonathan how to make a game that really works!

One thing I am constantly reminded is how horrible I am at resolving puzzles...

Thanks PrestonD, for the kind comments about the Dark Fall games.

I'm thrilled to hear that the "creation" section is inspiring. It was never intended to be a full tutorial, instead I hoped it would illustrate what can be achieved by a single individual, when thinking realistically.

The first Dark Fall game was self published for over a year, and continued to sell while I was producing the second game. It was at this point that The Adventure Company showed a definite interest, and offered a publishing contract. They did not fund the games, I did. The projects were financed from my own pocket. I get paid on a deliveries basis, with gold masters being payment milestones. So, no game, no pay.

Thanks for the topic, and good luck with the game projects!

Jonathan

I don't know the games yet, but the creation section was very interesting for me - thanks for sharing :) Good luck for future games!
