Old games interprenters
« on: June 14, 2003, 02:06:33 PM »

Ok... those are interprenters (which means the .exe) for old games. Most of them are opensource and runs on many OS. And some of them are not 100% finished yet.

SCUMMVM - www.scummvm.org - For Lucasarts adventures that use the scumm engine and also for "Beneath a steel sky" and Simon 1 & 2.

LBAVM - http://www.yaz0r.net/lba.php - For "little big adventure"

SARIEN - http://sarien.sourceforge.net/ - For old sierra games that use the AGI engine

NAGI - http://www.agidev.com/nagi.html - The same as sarien but with 2 differences : 1)it has better support for some games, 2)it's closed source

FREESCI - http://freesci.linuxgames.com/ - For sierra games that use the SCI engine (there is some new progress for the SCI32 engine too)

XU4 - http://xu4.sourceforge.net/ - For Ultima 4

NUVIE - http://nuvie.sourceforge.net/ - For Ultima 6

EXULT - http://exult.sourceforge.net/ - For Ultima 7

YARN - http://yarn.sourceforge.net/ - For the games "Inherit the Earth" and "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream" (they both use the same engine)

FREEKYRA - http://sourceforge.net/projects/freekyra/ - For the Kyrandia games but it seems dead. But it's opensource, so other developers might want to help someday.

That's all I know! Are there any other interprenters that I don't know of?

I have to say those guys do an admirable job. It must take lots of hacking to build such an interpreter :o

He! He!... But as I said the Kyrandia interprenter is dead for a long time now and it has no files released :( But you can play the Kyrandia games fine on a recent windows version (all three runs fine on my windows2000 sp3 system).

Does anyone know of any other adventure/rpg interprenter?

Really? I remember having problems with Kyrandia 2 on Pentium processor... There was some patch for it if I remember correctly.

I have tried all of them recenttly and no problems on my machine. But you might want to try those :

VDMSOUND
http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound/
For having sound in old dos games (emulates adlib, soundblaster etc)

DOSBOX
http://sourceforge.net/projects/dosbox
A great dos emulator (haven't tried it with the kyrandia games, but if I remember correctly it can play the first 2)

Well actually I don't mind if I don't get the Kyrandia games working, Ultimas interrest me more. I still remember when I first got Ultima6.  I played it ALL the time, I slept like 4 hours a night, barely enough to keep me up the next 20 hours.  ;) Gosh I never finished the game, maybe I should start a maranthon right now (I'm on vacation right now)

Does anyone know of any other adventure/rpg interprenter?

No, but you can ease the pain by playing Nethack, Angband or Moria.  ;)

Hallelujah Ultima7 works perfectly!  :)

Have you checked the post 1.0 versions? (1.1 unstable) They add some nice new features!

Have you noticed in the download page that the same team has started to program an interprenter for Ultima8? :) It's in very early, alpha and unusable stage right now.
