invalid image

I'm just going through the scene tutorial and I thought I would change the scene background with a different one, but every time I try, it says invalid image. I can paint the one that's there and re-save it, but if I make a new image, it won't load.

What kind of image is that?
If WME uses the "invalid image" placeholder picture, it means it was unable to load the image for some reason. You should be able to find the reason in wme.log file (generated in your project directory) or in the debugging console (if it's enabled).

If I make a different background and I name it background.bmp and import it, it will work. If it's a jpg and I name it background.jpg, it won't won't work. It imports the jpg file and puts it in the directory and it shows when I click on it, but not when I click on the room icon or when I start the game.

"Import Image" command only copies the image to the folder. You then have to open the scene in SceneEdit (double click on the .scene file) and set the background there.
