Title: #600 - The unofficial introduce-yourself thread
Post by: Scarpia on April 21, 2003, 06:25:00 PM
Yes! I got the 600th post on the board!!!! Medal! Medal!

Well, uh... Hi. I just wanted to ask a question (start a mini-survey actually):

* how old are you all?
* where are you from?
* what is your occupation?
and
* what is your three favourite adventure games?

I'm the one who started this survey, so I'll be the first to give it a go: I'm 21, from Denmark, and for the past year or so, I've been teaching basic computer science to staff members at municipalities and medium-sized businesses. In september, I'll begin studying computer science at the University of Aarhus. My three favourite adventure games are Monkey Island 2, Beneath A Steel Sky and Larry Laffer Looking for Love (in all the wrong places)

* I'm 28y (*damn* I'm *OLD*!)
* I live in Northern Germany
* Working as IT developer (well - internet programmer !), I'm programming web frontends and content management systems, databases, that sort of... ! Using the internet before the WWW became modern, published my first mailbox (sort of bulletin board system) on an Atari 600 XL and a telephone and some glue... oh don't ask! :)
* My favorites: Dunno. I'd say DOTT, Broken Sword, Monkey Island 1-3 ;-)

Uh, no, I like so many adventures... can't say for sure these three (five...) are really my favorites, but I love them anyway.

Hhehoa, never realized there was this kind of "get to know other forum members" thread, so here goes...

I'm 20 (soon 21)
from Finland (No, there's no polar bears walking in the streets)
Currently my occupation is office secretary (or officewhore if you prefere) basicly it means that I do all the shitty work that no one wants to do. And there really is a reason why they are called shitty work... But luckily in fall I'm going to start my studies in computer science (whee!) and no more office work for a long time!

EDIT:
Oh of course I forgot to mention the games. Well It's really difficult to put them in order, but I really loved countdown, monkey island series, blade runner, lure of tempress, hero's quest (or quest for glory1 if you like), both simon the sorcerer games (the 3d was crap), space quest series, lost files of sherlock holmes, willy beamish, the list is almost endless...

Whoops, sorry Odnorf for the big delay, but this is the second time I check this post ever (the first was when I wrote what I wrote). Well, "baccalaureate" is the english for the spanish "bachillerato" (or at least that's what the dictionarie says... The baccalaureate is the level between secondary education and university. Hope I explained well, my english isn't good either.

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

I guess I could say Beyond Good and Evil as the third, but it's more action than adventure. I lost all enjoyment of Full Throttle after FT2 got released (WTF are Lucasarts thinking these days).

I'm 23, presently residing in the state of Utah in the USA. I suppose my occupation would be 'student'; I'm studying Information Technology, which is sort of a watered down Computer Science program. After I receive my Associate (2-year) degree, though, I plan to study Game Design/Development.

My favorite adventure games are many, and its difficult to order them; but I will say that my all-time favorite is Grim Fandango, and after that comes (in no particular order) every single LucasArts adventure game -- I've played every one of them except for Monkey Island 2, which I've never been able to find (although if I had a credit card, I could probably buy it from LucasArts' online store or from Ebay).

Currently I'm working with ForeverDream Studios on our noir-style mystery adventure, The Curves of Danger, which uses the WinterMute engine.

I'm 25 years old, from the north of Italy.

Actually I'm doing my final work for the degree in computer science developing an adventure for teaching purposes with WME. Great tool! I've considered all the engines out there but WME is the better by far, really.

I'm a great fan of all the Lucas adventures, liked Syberia and Runaway but I think Lucas has a depth in his adventures that nobody really achieves like those people.

I'm 25 years old (seems to be average here? ;D) and i'm from Germany, living in the northern federal state "Niedersachsen" ;)  I'm working as a media designer (creating websites, print things, layouts etc).

Its difficult to decide on three games... i would say the monkey island series (excluding part 4 ;) ), Day of the tentacle was great, too, and perhaps Space Quest (up to part 5). But i love lots of games out there.. Indiana Jones 3&4 are top-notch, Beneath a steel sky is great, Larry, Baphomets Fluch (its broken sword i guess), Legend of Kyrandia & Hand of Fate, Freddy Pharkas, Loom (oh man i love it), Shannara, Future Wars (i played it on an amiga :D) and 1000 other games, i guess ;)

Interesting that some of you dont seem to know lots of old classics.  :o

Yeah Germans love invading communities. You can never be safe from them.

Well as everyone posted stuffs about themselves here I go then:

I am average 25 years old, finished studying information technology last year, used to live in Mainz/Germany and worked in Web Services (CMS, DBs, Lotus Notes, WebSphere), fell in love with a Brazilian hot babe (HOORAY!) and moved to Brazil.
Currently have a lot free time on my hands until all my documents are finally legalized to start working.

Uff deciding on 3 games is hard.
Well my favourites are The Longest Journey, Gabriel Knight, Monkey Island 1&2, Baldur's Gate 2, Freelancer.

Hi all,

I'm Michael from Germany, close to cologne. My age???  38 yrs old and I think I'm the oldest here so far  ;D.
So please show some respect to the older ones.
Since I'm 17 computers are my hobby. Does anyone  know the first Sinclair X81? Well, I didn't own it,
but went every day to a dealer who had it on display and was coding inside the store.  :D
I owned C64, CPC 464, Amiga 1000, Amiga 500, Atari 1024STF and now several PCs. And since the Mini MAC is
out I'm sure someday a MAC will be on the list too!
Since 21 years I code. Some small and never published games but nothing big. More tools and extensions in the form
of DLLs and libs were born and hit the public. Because of this I used and still use several languages or how I call
them "tools". For me a language is just a tool and I use the one that fits the job the most.
My tools I use right now:

- IBASIC PRO
- Visual C++ 6.0
- Delphi 6
- Blitz3D and BlitzMAX
- and now WME  ;D

I have several over ones like DBP and 3DGS but don't use them now.

Graphical wise I do a little more lately and try to become better in modeling and drawing. I use these tools:

- Photoshop 6
- ZBrush 2
- Truespace 6.6
- Ultimate Unwrap
- Poser 4

My team discovered WME just recently and we are looking forward to develop a full game with WME.

My daily job is progamming tools and statistics for an utility company. Also maintaining and customizing our billing
system. We use standard software from SAP. I'm sure some heard of it.

Ahh before I forget. My favorite adventure games:

- Discworld
- Police quest
- Monkey Island

I think that is enough for now.

Cheers
Michael

And yes I think its good, you can choose between graphics and programing. You will also learn math and you will learn some productions and planning and general gamedesign as well wich is nice.
The first semester might seem a little boring but then it realy gets down to business.

My name is Daniel, I'm a nineteen year old guy from germany. I found this site over the "the white project"-homepage. Actually I never really programmed games or other software, but finished the first little steps in AGS and want to create my own adventure, someday.
My mainskills are graphics and music. Graphics are usually done in PhotoShop, Illustrator and so on. Music in FLStudio - soon expanding my software with some other programs, maybe cubase, cakewalk or something...

Whatever. Hi ya guys! :D

I am really interested in adventure games and especially in making them. I've been using Chris Jones' AGS (Adventure Game Studio) this far, but now I thought I could try out something new... so I downloaded Wintermute. :P

It seems much harder to use, but maybe I will learn it someday. :)

I'm 25 and I work in a Call Center as a Customer Service Agent.  I'm a wanna be game developer and compose music on the side.  Some of my music is available at http://download.com/timefactor

I've always been a big fan of the cinema type games like double switch, the beast within, Dragon's Lair, Dracula Unleashed and many others, but my favorite games are The Monkey Island Series, the Gabriel Knight Series, The Last Express, Blude Runner, The Longest Journey, and Syberia.(Sorry, I had to least them all, I couldn't choose 3)

I live in Nashville, Tennessee in the United States.

I'm new to the communitity, and I'd also like to say that I am very impressed with WME, I only wish I had more time to learn it.

Thanks - McCloud

I don't know where, to start  ;D
I'm 20, from croatia and study graphic (although not design)
I've just started to even look for an engine to do my adventure, yeah I'm one of those people that don't have the slightest idea from where to start and have really minimal knowledge of programing (some Flash, Html, nothing worth mentioning and 3d work is mostly connected to designing UT levels :P) but have, what they think, are great ideas
I'm willing to learn but get annoyed when things are explained but not actually shown in practical use (which is a bad way to view things but I always learned that way...)

okay, too much writing, I hope to be a frequent visitor here

Greets to everyone!

I'm older than I wish to say and I live in Idaho in the US. I'm a Network Administrator and Applications programmer currently working for a mid-sized manufacturing company. I write fiction and fantasy short stories, play guitar and compose electronic music (not very good at it yet). I also enjoy sport touring on my BMW R1100RS whenever I get the chance. ;)

I started adventure ganming with the Zork series back in the '80's and continued on through most of the Sierra games, Kings Quest, Space Quest, etc (too many to remember).

I've been wanting to write some interactive fiction stories for some time based on my textual works. I've played around with Inform: http://www.inform-fiction.org/ and TADS: http://www.tads.org/ but wanted to do more with sound and graphics. Then I found the Wintermute Engine and I believe there is still a market for this style of game, (especially with the "experimental 3D" enhancements to WME). Even with all the "high-tech" FPS and RPGs out there gamers still enjoy a good story line and solving puzzles.

Man, am I gonna have fun with this! :)

My name is Clark Kromenaker, and I'm a student at the University of Southern California studying Computer Science and Game Design, though I am originally from Wisconsin.  I'm 18 years old, and am currently working on a Wintermute project, as well as a website which I hope, when launched, will be successful enough to become profitable.  Besides being a website for my "studio" projects, I also want it to contain extensive tutorials and free resources (models, graphics, sound, etc) for games, websites, and other tech-related items.

Favorite adventures:

Gabriel Knight (all three, but I like the 3rd the most)
Riven
Space Quest (couldn't name just one)

I found Wintermute when, after constantly nagging on the AGS forum for features such as usable video playback, subtitles, and better volume controls, someone finally mentioned WM.  When I looked it up and started messing with it, I was shocked that it isn't more widely used.  Not only does it seem to have everything you need for a truly professional game, but it also seems to be so abstractly constructed as to allow for some widely varying game styles.  Well done. :)

I'm a graphic/web designer mostly full-time, part time vocal coaching in the evenings. I used to sing, and now I just teach. I have a 13 month old. I run http://minutegamer.wordpress.com and it's getting a bit slow lately because I'm SWAMPED.

I've always wanted to make adventure games; but life gets in the way. I have a background in music and art, and very little in programming. I used to be a front end web dev in the 90's dotcom boom.

My top 3 favorite adventure games:

Grim Fandango
The Longest Journey
Syberia

There used to be a German section of the forum, but it was pretty much dead (even though there are numerous WME users from Germany) so I eventually removed it. But if there's enough interest, it's not a problem to start subsections for other languages (just don't expect me to post in them, I'm limited to English/Czech).

Hello all.  I'm British, interesting in affordable ways to do scripted interactive storytelling about real places.  I teach computer games, among other things. Wintermute seems an ideal engine, especially as it's powerful, being actively developed, is reasonably-well documented, and is completely free and royalty-free even for commercial products.

Loom - It's a short and absolutely stunning tale with beautiful aestethic visual (besides I'm also a sucker for those pixels :D)
Grim Fandango - It's amazing, If you havn't played it, do it now
Fahrenheit - Besides giving us one of the coolest trailers of all time http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAi0Uy02WDs
I love it for what it actually is. When this came out the point and click genré was pretty much dead, hanging on a lose thread. Then this game came out and kicked ass with it's new type of direction in which it stirred the genré in. It's gameplay and design is on par with the design at that time

My wintermute project so far includes one project that is still in it's drawing board phase, I'm super swamped so I do hope I can actually be able to make something considering that Wintermute is actually more powerful and greater than most people think!

* how old are you all?
* where are you from?
* what is your occupation?
and
* what is your three favourite adventure games?

I posted here before so I can't introduce myself again but my favorite adventure game is Moonmist, played on an emulator.  I'm a lawyer.  I love cats but my favorite new pet is a python.  :  )  I wear gloves to pick him up but without the gloves his skin is so velvety.  :  )  He's shy thankfully and hasn't bitten me yet.  :  )  Currently I'm playing Ravenhearst Mystery Case Files and Azada Ancient Magic.

Howdy all.

I'm Ben, I'm 24, from the North of England and I work in various IT departments for a utility company (currently project manager) ::slug.

My three favourite games have to be: Sam and Max!! (Nothing beats it so far!), The Monkey Island series (mainly number 2 as it was the first I played) and the Broken Sword series (mainly number 1).

I thought I'd join this community as I'm just starting to do some games design/creation in my spare time and will no doubt need some help along the way.

Hello,
my true name is Lars, i am 28 years (minus 1 day) old (but feel like beeing 99 or so) and i am from germany. I am graphic designer for print media (and it is SO GREAT to work with 72 dpi for an adventure instead 300 dpi for print ... sooooooooooooo much faster).
I do have more than 3 favourite adventures but if i must decide i would name the whispered world and monkey island 1 and 2.

The whispered world triggered me to get into game design myself and my goal is to build an adventure that is comparable charming/enchanting/lovely/warm/breathtaking/lively/inwardly/melancholic. (I know ... very high aims but imho i am a passably good artist and i will do my best).
I will report about the proceedings from time to time here: http://forum.dead-code.org/index.php?topic=3846.0 (http://forum.dead-code.org/index.php?topic=3846.0)

I'm back

Sorry, my dayjob and several other nasty things took all of my time for over a year now ...
But now I'm back and loaded with creativity.

Good Morning? everyone

I'm new in forums, so it is time for a quick introduction...

My name is Jarkko (Finnish name, try to say it =P  ), but in web/irc I have been known as Madraccoon last 15 years. I am an old-schooler (at least in computer/demo scenes), way beyond 30 now, but still playing, specially adventure games...

I have worked as a 3D artist last 15 years and I have taken part to many commercial game projects before, but now is the first time I started my own project, graphical adventure of course  ;D

I have tested many game platforms (from AGS to totally own engine), but it seems that I start to loose my live on this forum  ::beer
This is enough for now, but i think you will hear from me again...  ;)
(web pages are on their way as we speak...)

All old adventure games (fate of Atlantis, Sam and max) are close to my heart, but also many "non" adventure ones (Master of Magic, Master of Orion, System Shock)
PS. How many of you have played the  original Master of Magic, and how many had problems with dos and "insufficient memory"  >:D

Cheers  ::beer

Hi everyone,

just wanted to say hello to you all. Have been reading and lurking the forums a lot in the last days as I'm about to dive into the world of Wintermute. Yee-haw! I've just started working on an adventure game which I hope to have finished by the end of year. Now the funny thing is, that I have said exactly that about an AGI game that I started making back in 1999, and which is still not finished today... Hmm... At least we had 2 playable demos out back then, maybe some of you even have played it and remember it. The game was called "V - The Graphic Adventure" and attempted to unofficially adapt the scenario of the classic 80s mini-series "V" into a Sierra style adventure.

Anyway, can't wait to get my hands on Wintermute. Working on script, graphics and animations for now, so I'm pretty excited to start assembling everything and scripting soon. Optimistic that I will be asking a lot of silly questions in the process... Be prepared! ;)

Cheers
Björn

Greetings to everyone on the WME forums!

I am Keith, a 35 year old 3D artist, musician and game designer from Pretoria, South Africa, who has worked on two (non-adventure) commercial games in the capacity of level, sound and graphic design.
I have been playing around with WME for several years now, but only recently decided to dive in and start creating full adventure games using this engine. I prefer creating atmospheric horror games, and WME is perfect for a series of projects I have planned.

I have been lurking on these forums for quite some time, and I have to say that I love the friendliness and helpful nature of the forum members.

I am very happy to finally join the forums. Expect to hear a lot from me as I badger the technical boards with all sorts of questions  :P

Haha, I'm getting nervous, just like a presentation in school or something.  :P
Ok, Breathe....
I'm 38, from Sweden, and I have no occupation.
Favorite adventuregames is a nightmare to list.
If I look at totally played hours it would probably be:
Morrowind, Diablo 2, and all of the MDNA-games.

And it was all thanks to the Carol Reed Mysteries that I got into this.
I really hope I will be able to learn how to use WME,
cause making games seems like something I would love to do.

So hi everyone, and If the scripts don't kill me,
you'll se me again.  ;)
