Technical forum / Clarification on save system?

Hi, I'm totally new to WME and I'd like to ask/clarify something quickly.
When/how are variables from scripts saved and loaded?
Since there is absolutely no documentation on the topic, I just assume that they are always saved when the game is saved and restored when the game is loaded. Is this correct?
