Title: Asylum
Post by: harlock1975 on January 18, 2009, 03:15:55 PM
Hi everyone!
"Asylum" is the temporary (and uninventive  :)) title of an adventure my brother and I are trying to complete using the great WME engine. It tells the story of a man's escape from an asylum that is currently burning down, with many crazy guys running around and some hidden truths to be unveiled. It sounds clichè?  ;D
We have 50% of the plot, the main characters and a few initial screens. I am attaching a couple of them for you to review, please be kind!

These are the features we are focusing on
I am still evaluating the 2.5D thing, though.

Well, I hope that posting here is a way of getting this project complete!
What do you think?

Will this be a humour game like "Edna breaks out" ("Edna bricht aus", not sure if its released outside of Germany) which also plays in and outside an Asylum? http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/edna-bricht-aus/screenshots

Or is this more of a serious game? (the corpse is suggesting that)

I like your attached scenes, nice art :) If your game has a serious setting you really should try to get into 2.5D, that would be more fitting in my opinion (provided you find someone who can do it properly)

Thanks for pointing out that, Darky!
The storyline will involve a few moral decisions (that will lead to three different endings) and some gory images, I think I can classify it as "mature" (I am going to edit the first post  :)).

I like 2D even for such themes ( look at White Chamber for example ( yes I know it's manga style ) ). You should simply give your scenes a much darker tint and some flickering light in WME and it should work :)

You're right, darker images will better suit the game's atmosphere  ::thumbup
The characters are our real problem, right now. 2D animation on paper is a pain and my skills with 3D are dated back to the DOS version of 3D Studio!!!

Maybe I posted too early  :-\

Oh, well, we'll see.
Cheers!

PS One of the reasons I started developing this game is the release of White Chamber's source code, I loved that game!

We darkened it a bit and put in our main character (sorry, Molly!).
The walk animation really needs improvement, but we're working on it.

Thank you very much, Myles!
I was afraid this comic-bookish style was not right for a game
I will forward your compliments to my brother, who's the main artist!

Cheers,
Luca

Long time, no see :)
We are still working on the game, and it's getting better (well, I have a few problems I am going to discuss on the tech forum). I hope to have a demo available in a month.
In the meantime, here's a front image of Carlo, our main hero!

Stay tuned!

Wow i love your art style, shaggy lines and very simple coloration like a pencil drawing. Exspecially the shaggy lines fit the insane location, a place where everything is out of place etc.
Only the colors could be a little bit darker. John Bolton would be something that comes to my mind (the comic artist, not the politican)
Please note i do not say you have to mimic his style but maybe he could be an source of inspiration.

Also maybe i can help you with your animation problem:
there are great sites out there with free *.bvh motion capturing animations like these two sites:
http://sites.google.com/a/cgspeed.com/cgspeed/motion-capture
http://accad.osu.edu/research/mocap/mocap_data.htm

free to use and i think if one in your team can use a 3d application you could use the animations as some kind of rotoscoping technology.
I use them for my rendered 3d animations and the quality is simply stunning!

Thanks Akusa!
I didn't think I could find motion capture files so easily, I am currently trying to use them in Blender.
Hope we can manage it!
