Try reinstalling the display drivers (you can download the latest ForceWare from nvidia's website). They are probably not installed correctly for some reason.

I am running wintermute under VMware Fusion on the Mac and I just got this same message. The program ran fine , but I had to reinstall windows XP and when I did this message came up. Any ideas on how to solve this one. My video drivers are current.

I guess the problem is related to VMWare indeed. It uses 2D software to try to render 3D content. The real 3D in VMWare is still an experimental issue and it's under heavy development.
I'm afraid you should use WINE or CEDEGA (Cider in case you have a Mac), downloable from www.transgaming.com

Remember to bind the exe to your game datafiles when compiling the project as sometimes Wine can't find the data file and with this aproach you could run it with no problems at all.

It was working fine until I updated my copy of XP. Nothing else has changed so I'm not sure where the issue is. Is this link for another program? I am running this on a Mac.

For anyone else that has this problem, here is the answer:

Warning: Apple Mac OS X 10.5.7 Update breaks VMware Fusion's 3D acceleration for Macs with ATI graphics
The ATI driver in the Mac OS X 10.5.7 Update causes slow performance or Windows 3D application crashes with VMware Fusion's 3D acceleration. If you have an ATI card and need VMware Fusion's 3D acceleration feature, we recommend you hold off on updating. We are working with ATI and Apple for them to resolve the issue.
