Illumination and Wierd Animation glitch
« on: October 08, 2008, 05:40:00 AM »

Hi guys,
Ok so we have two problems. The first problem is that we have two characters on screen at once but only one of them is illuminated by the light, why is that?

The second problem is that we have a character that has a scarf and for some reason the animation for the scarf works great in our 3D package but in WME it looks all screwed, it flickers basically. I can't post a good screenie of it coz it's animation obviously but I hope this one gives you a good idea:

We used plains for the scarf. Any help would be great.

Cheers ::beer

I would ask your artist to compare material settings of the two meshes.
As for the scarf, try disabling backface culling (actor.DrawBackfaces = true;) to see if it makes any difference.

Thanks heaps for the reply mnemonic. The backface thing worked. But the character is still dark after we checked the materials. Could the lights in the 3d scene be too low?

I'm not a WME expert, but from my tests (3dsmax>export 3ds), I can say that changing the intensity of a light does nothing.
Only the position and the color of a light make the difference.
So, to test your scene, put just one omni light in one side, make it pure red, turn all other lights off, export the geometry.
In your 3D settings of the scene, set the ambient to black.
You should see your 3D characters red.

Ok thanks for the info. I guess it must be a material thing. I'll get the 3d guys to look into it.

I checked materials and all seems to be in order, wonder what's wrong there. Anyone has ever encountered this problem before?

It is very strange that only one character has the problem.
If you use spot lights, check the position.
But
if the materials are OK,
if doing the test I told you (with 1 omni light) give you the same problem,
then ............may be it (the girl) is not a 3D character!

Well, I can make a quick 3D scene to show you the same problem,
but I don't know how to upload the image here  ???.

Hi Birdie,
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. If you want to post an image just upload the image using a file hosting/image hosting site and then paste the url here.
Hope that helps. Also our scene only uses 1 omni light. Thanks for the post anyway.

Sorry for the delay,
This is a quick test 3D scene.

You see 2 (very primitive) 3D actors and the well known Molly.
The 3D actors are OK, getting illumination from the 3D scene.
But Molly does not (because she is 2D). She looks grey because she stands on a grey region.

Well, I don't know if this is your problem, but it very similar.

Yeah that's it alright Birdline. Except our characters are 3D. We are still looking into to the problem, when we figure it out I will be sure to post the solution for others who might have the same problem.
