Game announcements / Juniper Crescent - The Sapphire Claw

"From the co-designer and co-writer of 'Broken Sword - The Sleeping Dragon', using characters from the comic strip 'Juniper Crescent', comes a cartoon comedy game that will entertain and delight" - http://www.juniper-games.com/sapphire/sapphire.htm

Looking VERY promising, especially since Steve Ince is known of actually finishing projects. ;)

General Discussion / Are you a traditionalist? The Cold Hotspot
« on: January 30, 2005, 06:57:16 PM »
At Adventure Gamers we've been fighting over this topic for years. The Cold Hotspot, a recent feature at Adventure Developers, summerises the controversial topics pretty well. It's written by one of the progressivists.

The adventure game is not sacred or written in stone and needs to own up to it! There, I said it. Sue me, but you'll be doing so more out of spiteful denial than charges of defamation. The truth is, the adventure game genre, as we all know it, has long been suffering from obscurity, lack of progress, sheer banality, isolation (surprise!), and, simply, from the garden variety of dullness. And everyone - developers, publishers, the media, and yes, we gamers ourselves - is guilty of creating and fueling this suffering. The apparent sources of my grievances, viewed top-down, are obvious, but some are less so. As I delve deeper, I'm finding some intriguing and inherent contradictions, fallacies, and redundancies that add to this muck. As devoted supporters and partakers of the adventure game, don't we all want to see it move ahead and reach a bigger audience and be restored back to its former glory as it was during the days of Lucas Arts and Sierra and -- Stop right there!! You see? That's what I mean! You didn't catch it, did you? Read on.
(read the rest)

What do you think? I don't necessarily agree that we have to look in other genres for examples of how to make adventure games different. The adventure genre contains lots of games that are different, and I don't think redefining the genre itself is in any way necessary. But then again, I'm not a purist...

Software and games / Bad Brain to publish Project Joe
« on: January 12, 2005, 04:26:22 PM »
"Synthetix Interactive, the company behind the seemingly on-hold "Project Joe", have announced a publishing- and development partnership with Bad Brain. The agreement underlines the companies' intent to work together, though it's uncertain what project that will be, or if it will involve 2D comedy adventure Project Joe. Bad Brain is also publishing A Vampyre Story."

Technical forum / Cursor for characters/entities
« on: January 11, 2005, 06:58:34 PM »
In Curves, the cursor changes to a talk bubble when its moved over a character - or perhaps in the case of some other character it's changed to a fist. Or at least, that's what should happen. How should I implement this? I put this in the character's script file, and it didn't work...

Code: [Select]
on "MouseEnter"
{

if(Game.GetCursor()=="sprites\cursors\others\arrow.sprite")
{
Game.SetCursor("sprites\cursors\Others\talk.sprite");
}

}

on "MouseLeave"
{

Game.SetCursor("sprites\cursors\Others\arrow.sprite");

}

The problem is with the GetCursor thing. How does it work?

Technical forum / WAV files
« on: January 11, 2005, 04:02:32 AM »
I have uploaded a WAV file for you that should be OK by WME. However, WME doesn't like this file. See here: http://www.foreverdreamstudios.com/book foldpage.wav

We have the same problem with all the other files made by our musician/sound effect editor person...

Technical forum / Mouse Out
« on: December 15, 2004, 07:03:43 PM »
I'd want the inventory to disappear when you move your mouse out from it but for some reason it doesn't work anymore. It worked with the old version, though.

Code: [Select]
#include "scripts\base.inc"

// ===================================================================
// When mouse leaves the inventory, we want it to disappear
on "MouseLeave"
{
var ActObj = Game.ActiveObject;

if (ActObj.Type=="button" || ActObj.Type=="item")
{
//do nothing

}else{
Game.InventoryVisible=false;
}
}

Any insight?

Feature requests, suggestions / Loading -cursor
« on: November 25, 2004, 08:52:59 PM »
This is terribly picky, but would it be possible to assign your own "loading" -sprites for when the graphics, etc. are loading - ala the hourglass in Grim Fandango or the CD in Escape from Monkey Island.

As we in the Curves team want to create our own settings screen, we'd like to know what registry values WME programs create and where.

Feature requests, suggestions / Sound Effects
« on: October 10, 2004, 06:33:13 PM »
Would it be difficult to implement sound effects (like a few different kinds of reverb and echo) for WME? Now that it's going full 2.5D and all :D

It would be easier than modifying each sound file separately (or indeed creating different versions of the same sound file if the same line needs to be said in two rooms where the echo is different, say outside and a large hall).

The Curves Of Danger is a classic murder mystery, embodying the thematic atmosphere of film noir.
