I was thinking something like flash or mpg for movie format, not a simple png or bmp.

You can get textures for poser at Renderosity, plus some different character and items... it would help TUH out if you go to http://www.theunknownhero.com/main/modules/webrings and sign up to Renderosity from there.

A lot are free only for non-commercial use but some are for either.

There are also some RPG style characters available for download at some sites that may help as a default character that isn't the WME default one. (Barbarian, Paladin, Dwarf, Elf, etc. in both male and female versions.) Ask me if you can't find them, I've misplaced the link.

EDIT: Free hosting at www.multimania.com if you understand French. Not totally dependable, but good enough as a site to explain your game and let people download.

Second one's style is clearer and better, first one's colour choices are better for a lot of it.

In the second one the computer desk looks like a metal or plastic cart, and I kinda like that... the light wood didn't really work there. But the first one's colour choice is warmer and has more contrast between objects and the room itself.

If you have a tiny "slice" of music that works, that can be used as a "motif" elsewhere for familiarity. (The best example of a motif is Beethoven's 9th. Everyone knows da-da-da-dum!)

You can vary it a little, use the same rhythm but different notes, same rhythm but change all major chords to minor or vice versa... or put the same notes in a different instrument or rhythm... or just part of it in various instruments...

Music is fun. ;D

Game design / Re:A little arty doodle I made - What do you think
« on: May 15, 2003, 10:00:13 AM »
You do graphics in Flash? Wow, I totally haven't gotten used to it enough to do that...

Photoshop has a good help system, I recommend it.

Paint Shop Pro I find really, really easy. But I've been using it for 5 years now. ;)

Using layers is the important thing. Oh, and saving very often at different stages with different filenames helps too.

I look forward to "Fart Sinfonia" by Jerrot and Dawsonus... ;) ;D

sounddogs.com is good for sfx too... thesoundsite.net is great for soundfonts.

It could definitely be done in a story sense if there was a limit to the number of player-characters. Like, NOT a MMOG, just a few buddies getting together to play, with one computer acting as server.

Maybe the characters could explore different areas and have "radios" to communicate... maybe they could be in the same area and watch each other's back in combat situations. Maybe there could be a race to solve a puzzle and the characters can act together for it or try to beat each other to the solution...

Or more like a playstation thing where you plug in controller2... etc.

Would you be able to make a loading movie or something and have the game itself still loading in the bg?Then you'd just have to make your movie hopefully longer than the longest it would take a slow computer to load the game.

But I know nothing of what I speak... ;)

General Discussion / Re:So, how much it's gonna cost?
« on: May 03, 2003, 05:51:50 AM »
Oh, wow. So much fuss...

Mnemonic, have you changed that line on the page yet? I really suggest you do so, because THAT is what everyone is misinterpreting. Change "it will cost $$$" to "please enquire with the developer about what would be fair in your particular case" or something. PLEASE. Then post that here as well and lock the stupid thread... unless we totally go OT and continue talking politics. lol

1. If someone makes anything free for non-commercial use, they are not out for BIG money. Ok?
(This deletes that entire section of the arguments as irrelevant.)

2. If someone wants to make something if you make something OFF THEIR WORK, they are not necessarily out for BIG money.
(Again, this deletes that entire argument as irrelevant.)

3. If someone charges any fixed price, they are more likely to be out to make money than someone who says "this is on a case-by-case basis, please contact me."
(Because that is NOT fair for people who are not going to be making money off their own work either... And another argument demolished.)

4. If you really want a free and opensource engine, use a different engine.
(There are alternatives - if you don't like something, don't use it. There goes THAT whole argument.)

 ;D

Now, on to the political stuff: www.politicalcompass.org shows how it is not "left" or "right" that is the problem per se, it is "authoritarianism" or "fascism". Hitler was close to the center, leaning right, which is why he became popular - his political views are in fact shared by many. But he was authoritarian, and that gave rise to the human rights abuses of his regime. Stalin was definitely leftist, but was also authoritarian.

Left or right merely means you have a difference of opinion on what to do to govern people and countries. Authoritarianism or libertarianism means you have a difference of opinion in HOW you achieve that, and authoritarianism justifies abuse by it's very nature.

I strongly recommend that people take the test. It's definitely interesting to see how your own beliefs stack up on the chart compared to well-known political leaders.

Afterglow looked really interesting from the pic.

Anyway, I finally got a good site and a good host for my project, so here it is: www.theunknownhero.com

We are very probably going to use WME. Fortunately, I'm NOT the programmer! ;)

Technical forum / Re:characters' text speed
« on: April 11, 2003, 12:22:05 PM »
If that is a game attribute, does that mean it would be possible to let advanced users modify the attribute in-game?

Like, would something like this be a way to avoid the problems certain commercial games ran into when computers got faster and therefore sped up games too much? (Open advanced options in the game, set the speed of calculation and talking, and then your game runs at a normal speed even on supercomputers. 8))

Just wondering.
