About Sprites and Photoshop
« on: August 19, 2011, 08:06:27 AM »

Hi guys,
do you think Photoshop could be suitable for creating the various frames for  a 2D actor / NPC animation? My Girlfriend, the person handling the artistic  side of our project, is quite skilled with that software, but she has always used it only for photo editing... So I'd like to know if there might be problems/limitations using that software for our purpose.
Thank you! :)

It depends what kind of character style you want. With photoshop you'll have to draw & paint every frame and that's the perfect tool for that. If you want to have a vector-like look then it's better to make your life easier and use an application that supports bones like Adobe Flash or the animation oriented Anime Studio or one of the tools of Toon Boom.

well, in our minds we have something like "the Curse of monkey island" (but not a funny style, I refer only to the animations)...

Hey,

Just want to share some experiences, i mostly do my sprites for 2D Style game using Photoshop, so far i didn't found any troubles using it, all is well and perfect. but again i have to agree with the moderator that using PS can be quite time consuming as you wont have basic "onion skin" to work on (unless you do it manually by changing the opacity of the top/bottom layer).

conclusion is, its doable! :)

here a sample chara I've done in PS :
