General Discussion / Wintermute featured in Micromanía (most popular spanish PC game magazine)
« on: February 25, 2005, 10:22:28 AM »
Wow guys, I just bought this month's issue of Micromanía, and what a surprise, a little reference to the Wintermute Engine!!!
Here is the small article:

I think no-one told Micromanía about it, so that means they found it by thenlselves and decided to talk about it in the same way!
Micromanía is the most popular PC games magazine in Spain, so I think this will attract some new spanish users... Manuel, get ready!!

General Discussion / So "What if?"
« on: January 12, 2005, 04:05:44 PM »
I suppose most of you know about this game, but I thought it would be fun. Feel free to lock/delete the thread if you think otherwise .
So the rules are very simple: First someone posts a "what if?" statement, the next answers to it and posts the next "what if?" statement!
For example:
Q: What if your HD starts burning just when you were about to compile the release version of your game?
A: I'd smile, and throw myself out of the window afterwards.
---
Q: What if Mnemonic suddenly decides to stop everything WME related?
et-cetera...
So I start:
What if you get a teleport machine?

General Discussion / The professional game developer slavery by EA
« on: November 14, 2004, 03:06:31 AM »
Look at this blog article, written by a spouse of an EA employee. It tells how employees are caged in the office for 90 hours a week with no compesation pays, or extra free time, or anything.
http://www.livejournal.com/users/ea_spouse/274.html
And by the comments, it seems it's same in a lot of ther big game companies (Atari for example). I don't know what to think... I really want to become a professional game developer someday, but if the working conditions are this crap... I don't know. I knew it involves a lot of work and dedication and passion (wich I think I have), and time expent at the office, but not THAT much, that's inhuman. I'm thinking that maybe the indie game developing is the way to go a lot of doubts are rising upon me.
But it seems the employees are taking back:

Let's see what's the result... I'm really expecting about it.

Software and games / Dreamfall
« on: May 14, 2004, 02:09:07 PM »
I really liked "The Longest Journey", and it seems "Dreamfall" is not that different from it, so I think I'd like it... And moreover, there's not going to be much more adventure titles released this year I'm afraid, so if this one is close to The Longest Journey in its plot, I'll buy it for sure. The game universe is the same so I think it would be. I just hope it'll not be cancelled as everything these days!!
So, what do you think of this game? What do you spect?
For the people who don't know what I'm talking about...

General Discussion / SPAM Imagination
« on: March 31, 2004, 11:28:32 PM »
Here it is, the most imaginative SPAM mail I've ever recieved. Hope you have fun, I had
"MR. CHEUNG PUI
HANG SENG BANK LTD.
DES VOEUX RD.BRANCH
CENTRAL HONG KONG
HONG KONG.
Let me start by introducing myself. I am Mr. Cheung Pui, director of operations of the Hang Seng Bank Ltd. I have a obscured business suggestion for you.
Before the U.S and Iraqi war our client Major Fadi Basem who was with the Iraqi forces and also business man made a numbered fixed deposit for 18 calendar months, with a value of Twenty Four millions Five Hundred Thousand United State Dollars only in my branch. Upon maturity several notice was sent to him, even during the war early last year. Again after the war another notification was sent and still no response came from him. We later find out that
the Major and his family had been killed during the war in bomb blast that hit heir home.
After further investigation it was also discovered that Major Fadi Basem did not declare any next of kin in his official papers including the paper work of his bank
deposit. And he also confided in me the last time he was at my office that no ne except me knew of his deposit in my bank. So, Twenty Four millions Five undred Thousand United State Dollars is still lying in my bank and no one will ever come forward to claim it. What bothers me most is that according to the laws of my country at the expiration 3 years the funds will revert to the ownership of the Hong Kong Government if nobody applies to claim the funds. Against this backdrop, my suggestion to you is that I will like you as a foreigner to stand as the next of kin to Major Fadi Basem so that you will be able to receive his funds.
WHAT IS TO BE DONE:
I want you to know that I have had everything planned out so that we shall come out successful. I have contacted an attorney that will prepare the necessary document that will back you up as the next of kin to Major Fadi Basem all that is required from you at this stage is for you to provide me with your Full Names and Address so that the attorney can commence his job. After you have been made the next of kin, the attorney will also fill in for claims on your behalf and secure the necessary approval and letter of probate in your favor for the move of the funds to an account that will be provided by you. There is no risk involved at all in the matter as we are going adopt a legalized method and the attorney will prepare all the necessary documents. Please endeavor to observe utmost discretion in all matters concerning this issue. Once the funds have been transferred to your nominated bank account we shall share in the ratio of 70% for me, 30% for you . Should you be interested please send me your full names and current residential address and I will prefers you to reach me on the email address below (cheungpui_04@primposta.com) and finally after that i shall provide you with more details of this operation.
Your earliest response to this letter will be appreciated.
Kind Regards
Mr. Cheung Pui"
Well, that's some good imagination doesn't it? I can't belive what some people can do just for a postal adress and a name! But what I'm afraid is what would be the second step of this interesting operation... Anyway, I can't belive anyone out there would believe such thing like this.
But the curious thing is that the mail came from the adress cheungpui_04@ozu.es , and "oz

Game design / Best SoundFont (GM Compliant) or SoftSynth
« on: December 20, 2003, 12:44:26 AM »
Well guys, this is related to music but not to game creation, anyway, maybe it fits better here than in general discussion.
For this new year's eve party, I'm planning to bring my computer to the building where the party is, and use it as a karaoke machine with vanBasco's Karaoke Player (a great freeware karaoke program BTW). Well maybe not everybody knows: karaoke files has usually the .kar extension, but they're nothing more than MIDI files with an attached lyric with its "flow".
But everybody knows the problem with MIDIs... Ok, they don't take up almost any space, but they tend to suck when it comes to listen to them. That's why I want to get better quality, but I don't know if I should use a good SoundFont (I have SBLive! so no problem), or maybe a Software Synthetiser.
About SoundFonts, right now I have the original 2MB, 4MB and 8MB SoundFonts that came with the sound card, and I've downloaded the Merlin GM V3.6, and the TimGM6mb. Right now I think that the Merlin is the one that sounds best, but I'm still not much satisfied with its quality. What's the best (free) GeneralMidi complete and compliant SoundFont? (Jerrot maybe you could help me here... ). Or wich SF combinations should I use? (Like,"this one for brass sounds", "this other one for guitars", "this for drumkits", etc cetera...)
And about SoftSynths, I've downloaded WinGroove, but I don't know why, it simply doesn't work in my system (I even get BSODs), Roland VST-88 (wich doesn't work under XP -_-U), and Yamaha SoftSynthetiser S-YXG50, wich works fairly good, and I think it shows more quality than the SoundFonts I have.
So my real final question is: What should I use to get the best quality when playing MIDI files, a good SoundFont (and I would greatly appreciate if you tell me wich one, I don't mind the size [plenty of RAM ]), or a good SoftSynth (and the same, with is the best one and blahblahblah, I don't mind if it's free or not, just a trial version is OK).
Well, thank you everyone, and have a happy christmas and new year!!

Technical forum / Scroll
« on: September 18, 2003, 10:27:43 AM »
Mhh... It has been a long time since I last wrote at the forums...
Well, my doubt: I don't completely understand the new .ScrollingSpeed* attribute of a scene. The higher the value, the faster the scroll, or the higher, the slower? What does it represents? The delay time between every shift, or the time it takes the camera to move the amount of pixels specified at .ScrollingPixels*?

P.S. Then, who won the bet?
EDIT: Updated the links and the images, thanks odnorf for hosting the files! BTW, I lost my Adventure Developers hosting... I don't know why though, all the rest of hosted sites are working, and I didn't recieve any e-mail from them telling my why they deleted the site and denied me acces... But I don't mind, now I have a domain and new server and all the stuff, so to hell with them

Feature requests, suggestions / .scale(scalePercent) method for entities
« on: August 10, 2003, 04:28:01 PM »
It would be useful to be able to scale an entity in run-time, no matter in wich region it is located, and overriding the scene's scale levels. It could be used even for -provisionally- solving the lack of multiple scale levels per region support, just with a little scripting, achieving a smooth scaling without having to add tens of regions...

Feature requests, suggestions / Other blending types
« on: August 09, 2003, 02:22:31 PM »
It would be great to have other blending types in WME, not only Alpha, like Additive, Substractive, Multplicative...
For example, additive is great for lens flares .
Anyway, this could open more doors for more graphic tricks and special effects...
So, Jan, what do you think?

Technical forum / Problems with DLL programming...
« on: July 14, 2003, 12:01:11 AM »
I'm triying to do that nifty file-writer DLL. BTW I have this:
It's still pretty rough, no exception handling and anything, but I was just starting & testing. It compiles OK and all that, but when I do in WME:
I get LOTS of errors, and I mean LOTS!! And it creates a file called "testing testing" or whatever you introduced has stringToWrite, with garbage inside (well, in fact, it ever has this inside:
Code: [Select]
#include <fstream>
#include <string>
using namespace std;
extern "C" __declspec(dllexport) int write_file(string fileName, string stringToWrite)
{
ofstream file(fileName.c_str());
file << stringToWrite << endl;
file.close();
return 1;
}
