Game design / Re: Killing the main hero?
« on: November 21, 2004, 10:54:37 PM »
Actually the only thing that REALLY sucks about dying in a game is, how far do I have to go back to reach the same point that I just reached short before dying.
Meaning if you forgot to save for more than an hour of playing, it really sucks having to replay all of that.

So I would recommend to either have some automatic saving at the moment you make a wrong decision or the option when you die to jump back short before.
And also the only thing that annoys me when playing an adventure is when you make a wrong move and first after half a day of playing you find out that because of that you can't finish the game anymore ;-)

Read this link:

Pirated software used to create help content in Microsoft's Windows XP

I checked it myself on my LEGAL Windows XP and it's true!!! The wave files of the Windows XP tour have been created with a Radium hacked version of SoundForge 4.5.

tsk, tsk, tsk....

Are you talking about the Adv. Orchestra "Light" CD for 100 Euros or the complete Set for 500?
Well concerning the quality the price is very acceptable, but I don't even have enough money for that  :(

Software and games / Re: Sanitarium - only for weird players!

Well... the game has videos (slide shows? I don't think so) and of course full speech. I still recommend the original version as usual. It's not the same thing to legally own a gameofcourse imo.
Are you talking about the original 3CD version or the Underdog CD rip? Well the version I had was from Home of the Underdogs but before they took it away. Instead of videos you had no sound and just pictures as cut-scenes.
Yeah I do agree with you about buying the original, but then only if you can really get your hands on the original for a fair price. Personally I think if ebay is the only place you can get a game you might as well copy it because the original manufacturer will not earn any money of it either way!

Also something else. On Apogee's website you can download their old games for 10.- $ each. I am sorry but 10.$ for an old DOS game that runs on a 286 machine is too much. Unles 80% of the price is for support because nobody knows anymore how to make it run  ;)

I played that version. It's ok, I never played the non-rip version, so I don't really know what I am missing.
You have cutscenes, they are kind of like a slide show (don't know if the original has videos). No speech of course, but subtitles.
Only one problem, when you are in the house (after the fair/circus) the subtitles dissapear in less than a second making them impossible to read.

Technical forum / Re: Sophia's Debt demo
« on: September 12, 2004, 12:37:30 AM »
you did not download the Sofia's Debt demo but the WME Engine demo.
The WME demo is not a demo of a GAME but just of the ENGINE. There is no story and no goal. It just demonstrates the basic functions of the WME Engine.
You mainly use it as a reference as how can I make my character move, how do I do a dialogue, how are inventory items handled etc.........

This demo just exists to introduce people to the engine and show it's functionality, nothing more.
The purpose of this demo is not to promote a game, but to help people who are planning to do a game with the WME Engine with revealing the engine basics.
Meaning you look at the demo, read the source code and see how it is done.

You quase already reached the end of the demo. This is NOT really a game.

Sorry if you got confused that this was meant as a game itself.

If you are looking for Sophia's Dept, you can find it here:

Software and games / Re: KRISTAL Audio Engine (freeware!)
« on: September 12, 2004, 12:21:32 AM »
Actually there are CUBASIS and LOGIC FUN, both free versions of their big brothers cubase and logic audio. Both support 8 Track audio and full midi support (but no soundfonts and no DX effects).
It's quite the same as Cubase Audio XT was 8 years ago. Only what had a price of 500.-$ is free today ;-)

USE the MONEY with the BOOK !!!

Seriously, it's just the engine Demo. It demonstrates the basics of the WME engine. It's mainly a great help for newbies to check out the source code and try to transfer those to their own game ideas.

Works here, too!!! (RadeOn Mobility 7500 - 32MB)

Only one thing. Is the shadow meant to be transparent or totally black. Here it's totally black!

General Discussion / Re: 3D characters public test

1) does the demo run at all?

2) do you see a shadow at character's feet?

3) is the character affected by colored lights?

4) does the demo exhibit any unexpected graphical glitches?
Many times when I move Trinity around places far away from the chair, the chair seems to be shadowed sometimes.

5) what videocard do you use with how much videomemory?
ATI MOBILITY RadeOn 7500 w. 32MB DDR

6) what's the approximate FPS (a the upper left corner)?
173 fps (32bit)

Note: When I use the keyboard controls I can move the character out of the area.
