Technical forum / Re: Static Inventory
« on: April 26, 2005, 06:26:55 AM »
Should I just move down my background let's say 50px in the SceneEdit and make my Inventory always on top, or should I make my Scene Start 50px further down, under the inventory (if that's even possible)?
The last part doesn't sound possible - also, even if it was possible, it would be more difficult to accomplish.

EDIT: NOTABLE QUOTE FROM NiHiLiS' SITE, THE Dead City DOWNLOAD PAGE, EVEN: "Several megabytes containing slighty moronic, pseudo-philosophical texts, depressive moody graphics and an ambient melancholic music, an absurd story and primitive puzzles."
Somebody out there likes me.  I'm just gonna write a full-on review for you guys now.
Ahem. That text has been there from the beginning. It's NOT an attack at you.

Technical forum / Re: On (MouseDown) ?
« on: March 13, 2005, 02:06:56 PM »
The source code for the 3D demo is in the wme_demo_3d directory.

LeftClick event means that the left mouse button has been pressed. LeftRelease event means that the left mouse button has been released. So the OnMouseDown function you are looking for is actually just a LeftClick function.

Like this:

Code: [Select]
on "LeftClick"
{

// do something

}

Technical forum / Re: about 3d support
« on: March 07, 2005, 02:41:29 PM »
Yep, WME supports animations for 3D models.

WME supports AVI (if the necessary codecs are installed in the player's computer), but no Bink as far as I know. Isn't Bink a partly commercial format - in order to use get rid of a popup screen you'd have to register it?

Game design / Re: Killing the main hero?

You can also use the main character as merely a vessel for telling a story. I'm trying to do that...

Unfortunately this message is very old (Brian is in Peru at the moment), but I try to remind our leader James of your post. :)

I must say I'm surprised. I didn't think a non-AGS games like Dead City and Enclosure would be played by enough people.

Bad Brain appears very unprofessional after all this. Especially their idea that the gamers should start pressuring Steve Purcell to give the right for the game to them! It angers me, trying to make everything Steve Purcell's fault if he doesn't want to make another S&M game.

General Discussion / Are you a traditionalist? The Cold Hotspot
« on: January 30, 2005, 06:57:16 PM »
At Adventure Gamers we've been fighting over this topic for years. The Cold Hotspot, a recent feature at Adventure Developers, summerises the controversial topics pretty well. It's written by one of the progressivists.

Quote
The adventure game is not sacred or written in stone and needs to own up to it! There, I said it. Sue me, but you'll be doing so more out of spiteful denial than charges of defamation. The truth is, the adventure game genre, as we all know it, has long been suffering from obscurity, lack of progress, sheer banality, isolation (surprise!), and, simply, from the garden variety of dullness. And everyone - developers, publishers, the media, and yes, we gamers ourselves - is guilty of creating and fueling this suffering. The apparent sources of my grievances, viewed top-down, are obvious, but some are less so. As I delve deeper, I'm finding some intriguing and inherent contradictions, fallacies, and redundancies that add to this muck. As devoted supporters and partakers of the adventure game, don't we all want to see it move ahead and reach a bigger audience and be restored back to its former glory as it was during the days of Lucas Arts and Sierra and -- Stop right there!! You see? That's what I mean! You didn't catch it, did you? Read on.
(read the rest)

What do you think? I don't necessarily agree that we have to look in other genres for examples of how to make adventure games different. The adventure genre contains lots of games that are different, and I don't think redefining the genre itself is in any way necessary. But then again, I'm not a purist...
