Max filename length
« on: September 26, 2007, 02:48:43 PM »

Is there a maximum filename length in ProjectMan? I tried to import a file and it said the name was too long. It's 67 characters long (plus .jpg).

Is there any reason for this? Or anyway around it? Cos changing the name will ruin the whole consistency of my naming system.

And it's not THAT long - I've had filenames in the past that were much longer (not in WME though).  8)

The whole path + filename can't exceed 255 characters. But that's a Windows limitation. I'm not aware of any limits in WME or ProjectMan, but I may be wrong. An exact quote of the error you're getting would help.

This is what it says, in a pop up window with a big red cross:

Error copying file or folder (this is the pop up heading)
Cannot copy my_big_file_name_here: The file name you specified is not valid or too long. Specify a different file name.

There's nothing different about the file name - just letters and numbers, same as all my others.

EDIT:

Oh, but you said the whole PATH can't exceed 255 characters, which it probably does. So, ooops.   :-[ :'( My bad. I'll have to change it then I think.

Yeah, it's a Windows message. If you have your project stored in the documents folder, you may want to move it to some other (shorter) path, because this whole "C:\Documents and Settings\Some User Name\My Documents" thing steals your precious letters :) Even Microsoft realizes this, they shortened the path in Vista.
