Precise Status on 3D Actors?
« on: August 23, 2003, 10:29:42 PM »

What exactly is the status on using 3D actors? What was the reason it was removed? What kind of issues are involved with re-adding? Do we have a timeframe? Or is that functionality expected to be re-added at all?

Well since there was MUCH bigger demand for 2D characters anyway, I decided to concentrate on other aspects of the engine.

And although the support for 3D chars is still present in the current version, they are not fully exposed to the scripting layer, and are missing some new features added in the meanwhile. Also I'm not completely satisfied with the overall concept of the 3D secene and I'd like to change some things first.

I don't have a timeframe, it's marked as a "long term task" at the moment.

If 3d-Actors ever return officially, what file-format is used for them?

Currently I'm using Milkshape3D format for characters/skeletal animation and 3DS format for the (hidden) scene geometry.

Dang dang...
I hope you bring it back because I already have special news in using 3ds format.  Using the free Gmax modelling program is great and suit for your WME.   Using 2d characters in a 3d world is also possible, and is very astonishing.  For example if you checked out RagnarokOnline ud be impressed of what you can do with WME, well with a few features I know of that I may suggest in sometime.

It has a responsive rotation system that also rotates around the 2d image, its obvious how the 2d character should work.  They also have a well made options and menu system that is only really a mere 2d image that can be customized as well.  In WME im sure the additional feature to making menus will also specialize in being able to loop animations; for instance the small statistics window it will be slowly shining from top edge to bottom.  So im really knowing good RPGs will slap out from your trusty ol' engine.  ;)
As well as FPS will tour in, but Im also wondering if your problem with 3d models is that you cant adjust camera views and such??
When you release the 3d feature again, please please announce it.
I will help and give some pointers if you need any. :)
Continue the good work ;)
