Technical forum / Re: 3D actor not showing and returning an error

When you just replaced Molly (2d) with Trinity (3d) make sure that you use LoadActor3d instead of LoadActor.
And of course check if all paths are correct and you made no typos.

Technical forum / Re: Character Textures

The larger the more memory they eat up, so you should try to keep them as small as possible. I'm not an expert, but I think 512x512 or 1024x1024 are common values for character textures ... though I don't know if how much bigger textures affect the performance as I only worked with 2d characters so far.

Wow, you are REALLY fast, it's not too long ago that you started the development, is it?
I'm going to try out the demo as soon as I have some more time.

Technical forum / Re: Mirror effect for the Actor
« on: September 05, 2007, 06:50:57 PM »
From a players point of view, and depending how big the mirror and the actor are in the scene, I'd probably just use some pre-rendered sprites instead of dealing with a second 3d actor - at least if the mirror is just eye candy and not a too prominent part of the scene.

Software and games / Re: Carrara 6 has DirectX Im/Export!
« on: September 01, 2007, 08:31:23 PM »
Some news :-)

I bought my update to C6 Pro today, and Dx Im/Export is available (only in the Pro-Version though).
I just started to work with it, and the import seems to be clumsy, at least I could neither import Trinity nor another .x-model I have - I'll try more if I find other models.

Export seems to work though, although I'm not sure if it supports Animation Sets too - I never used Carrara for character animation so far, so I know next to nothing about naming animations and so on. But the general export works and I could open an exported model in WME.

I'll keep you informed if I find out more.

Ok, to make the confusion perfect: Dx- Im/Export now IS a part of the Carrara initial release, it's just not able to export Poser-content - which is unnecessary anyway.

Feature requests, suggestions / Re: Support vrml as alternative to 3ds?
« on: August 19, 2007, 09:36:01 AM »
I just tried it using Carrara 5, and it really exports both camera and lights! Unfortunately, it does not include the object-names, neither in vrml1 nor vrml2 - but I don't know if that's a Carrara- or a VRML-issue?

Edit: Just tried the same with Blender, and there the object-names appear, so it should be a Carrara-Issue - although one that should be easy to solve by editing the files manually.

Now only Mnemonic must be convinced given that he would have to do all the work ;-)

Hm, I'm not sure, is vrml really still used that much? I have always been under the impression that it's a more or less dead format, although I could be wrong here.

Technical forum / Re: 3DS Export from Max8
« on: August 19, 2007, 12:21:53 AM »
Does Max perhaps have something like "director cameras" that many other programs have? These are standard cams that are only used for setting up scenes and not used like real cameras (can't be used for rendering for example). Just a guess, I have never used 3ds Max.

Very interesting style! Is that demo supposed to turn into a full game some day?

Wow, that's a lot of great news!

And the new screenshots look - as usual - fantastic! Q3/4 release would really be cool as UIG is one of the games I look mostly forward to :-)

Technical forum / Re: Hidden Geometry questions
« on: August 15, 2007, 03:02:50 PM »
I tried to open it in Carrara, and there all objects were in the middle ... strange.

Unfortunately, I can't tell more about the creation of hidden geometry as I don't use it - my game will be pure 2d, and I have no other programs that can export 3ds with cams and lights (except Blender of course), so I fear that Max, Maya and Blender are the only known possibilities so far - at least I don't know of any other.

Maybe some of the teams developing in 2.5d can share their knowledge?

You are right, all objects seem to get placed in the middle of the scene when exporting - sorry, I didn't realize that when trying out the PLE. Looks like VUE is no option either :-(

They go a bit too far on that :-) When they released Bryce 6 last year they didn't tell anyone for about 4 weeks ;-)

Not sure, I asked at the forum but didn't get a reply yet. AFAIK there were plans for FBX and/or Collada, too, but I don't know if any of them were done - maybe Dx Im/export even comes with a 6.x update or as a plugin ... unfortunately, DAZ's information politic is very lousy, so customers usually don't get informed about anything before it happened already.
