2.5D with hand drawn background and 3D actor
« on: October 28, 2011, 10:51:12 AM »

Hello everybody,

We have several hand drawn backgrounds as .png scanned images. We want to use 3D actors (created in 3DS Max).

I guess this is more a graphics question rather than a scripting/programming question. I know that we need a scene geometry for every background/scene. What I am wondering is whether there is a practical and accurate way to create the geometry using the hand drawn backgrounds as templates.

Perhaps someone has followed this method before? It seems to me as a practical way to go, since using hand drawn backgrounds instead of creating whole scenes in 3D and then exporting them sounds less time consuming.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not a 3D artist but I believe that the easiest solution will be to import the background in your 3D app and then draw very simple 3D objects over it. You can make your life easier if you use 2D pathfinding.

y best solution. anyway need only the walks (terrain where run the actor3d ) and wall o bloks for the shadows(if want that the shadow follow for example the wall of a house or of a rock ).

Stick to 2d pathfinding. You'll get in trouble normally using 3D Soft to try to make 3D Geometry, because I really doubt your handdrawn backkgrounds are 100% correcty in point of perspectives and stuff ;)

So 2D Pathfinding in sceneedit with 3D Actors is working well for 2D Backgrounds.

I agree with that, but I still need the geometry file. My question is more on how to create that file and keep it "correct".

Indeed very simple geometry is required, you just need to keep the perspective correct.

I thought it would be a common thing, but I guess teams who have a hand drawer artist will prefer hand drawn animations too. But hand drawn animation is time expensive and needs a lot of effort to get right, while 3D animation takes less time and you can find a lot of free material from the internet.

Thank you all for your prompt responses.

You don't need it for 2D Pathfinding.

This sounds very interesting. But how do I do that? I have a background and a 3D actor. In SceneEdit I set the floor area and add several waypoints. In the 3D tab though, I cannot check "Find path using 2D elements only" unless I add a geometry file. Am I missing something?

Geometry file is needed because you have to set a camera and light(s) for the 3D character. You can omit any other info/objects in it if you use 2D pathfinding and no real-time shadows.

Still I need a "walk_ plane" right?

Yes. Walkplane & camera must always be in the geometry file.

Well since a walkplane is required I guess we will just have to try time and again till we get it right. Or is there a clever way to do it?

Sorry, my fault. I really thought that no geometry is needed. I guess I thought that because for the last techtest we prerendered the 3D Character to be able to get rid of the geometry file :)
