Game security
« on: February 23, 2007, 03:43:44 PM »

Hi all,
       I was wondering if there is any game security with WME after the project has been compiled as an executeable?

What I mean is my project can be installed onto a PC and the CD/DVD removed and the game played, this is ok for submitted demos and circulated freeware games. But what about commericial games?

Is there a way that when the player loads up the project, gets to the main menu and clicks start that it checks that the correct media is in the drive and it is the official media??

I just want to stop people copying the game onto their harddrives and then giving the media to someone else to put on their machines. etc.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks.   ::rock

Copy protection is typically implemented using some 3rd party product (there are many commercial copy protection schemes available). It's not a function which should be implemented on a game engine level. Also, usually it's the publisher who deals with these things.

You can look into the following widely used 3rd party products:

http://www.macrovision.com/products/activereach_games/safedisc/index.shtml
http://www.securom.com/

Note, that to break a copy protection takes only around one hour to average pirate, so at the end of the day the only
annoyed customer would be the one, who bought your game since he's bothered with putting CD in the drive every time
he wants to play. ;)

I wouldn't recommend Star Force as it has questionable influence on OS stability.
